Men's Tennis Drops Match to FDU-Florham in Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - Webster University continued play here Monday in the 2020 Spring TennisFest here at the Evian Tennis Center by suffering a hard-fought 7-2 setback at the hands of FDU-Florham.

With the setback, Webster falls 4-3 on the season, while the Devils improve to 3-1 on the year. The loss snapped a two match win streak for the Gorloks.

"We competed hard in doubles, but fell in all three to a very tough FDU team," Webster head coach John Black said. "I really thought Riley (Muren) and Austin (Nation) played excellent tennis and picked wins in singles over quality opponents and I thought the rest of the guys fought hard and pushed their opponents, but couldn't pick up the wins."

In Monday's match, the Devils opened by winning all three hard-fought doubles matches, including picking up an 8-5 win at the No. 1 spot over Webster's tandem of senior Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Ill./Illinois-Springfield) and junior Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla./Purcell). The loss was the first of the season for Muren and Nation playing at the No. 1 doubles spot.

At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Tanner Haugen (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) and freshman Justin Weaver (Fenton, Mo./Rockwood Summit) falling 8-4 to FDU's Jonathan Carasso and Zach Puccia.

FDU's No. 3 doubles team won 8-2 over Webster's tandem of sophomore Harsh Jaswal (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) and sophomore Justin Kohler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo).

Meanwhile in singles, Webster's two points were earned at the top two spots in line-up as Muren earned an impressive 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Carasso, while Nation picked up a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot over Rich Bennett.

In No. 1 singles, Muren improved to 7-0 in dual meets this season and is pushed his overall record to 8-2 on the year, while Nation improved to 4-2 on the season and has now won four straight matches on the year.

The Devils won the next four singles matches as both teams battled, but FDU was able to hold off the Gorloks to win four points and earn the match win.

Webster will now take Tuesday off before returning to action on Wednesday, March 12 with a 12 p.m. ET match against Gettysburg College at the Chaplin Park Tennis Center.
