AUSTIN, Texas – Webster University senior pitcher
Matt Mulhearn (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) has been named to the Academic All-America Division III Baseball Second Team as announced on Tuesday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Mulhearn is just the fifth Webster student-athlete in school history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-American honors and the second baseball player (Eric Stack in 1991). He joins Stack, Christy Capkovic (2010, Women's Soccer), Jeff Wallner (2013, Men's Soccer) and Anna Grobelny (2019, Women's Track and Field/Cross Country) as the fifth different Gorlok student-athlete to receive CoSIDA Academic All-America recognition.
Mulhearn was one of three baseball players from the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to be named to the CoSIDA Division III Academic All-America Baseball Team as Spalding senior outfielder Garrett Wilson was a first team selection and Westminster (Mo.) College senior outfielder Ryan Clavin was a third team selection.
A two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District V selection and three-time member of the SLIAC Spring All-Academic Team, Mulhearn carries a 3.79 cumulative grade point average in his first year of pursuing his MBA at Webster. As an undergraduate student at Webster, Mulhearn earned a Bachelor's degree in Finance and carried a 3.77 cumulative GPA.
During his time at Webster, Mulhearn, who is expected to complete his senior campaign in 2021 after having the 2020 season cut short in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has become one of the top pitchers in school history as he is tied for third in career wins (22), fourth in career starts (34), fourth in career innings pitched (246.0), fourth in career strikeouts (227), fifth in career appearances (54) and sixth in career ERA (2.60). As a Gorlok, he is 22-7 with a 2.60 career ERA and in 246 career innings, he has walked just 45 and struck out 227 and has a career 5.04 strikeout-to-walk ratio. In his career, he has had five games of 10 or more strikeouts, including two games of 12 strikeouts each.
During the shortened 2020 season, Mulhearn was 0-1 with a 1.93 ERA as he made six appearances and four starts and tossed a complete game 12 inning affair against Concordia-Chicago. In 28 innings of work, he allowed nine runs, six of which were earned, while walking four and striking out 23. As a junior in 2019, Mulhearn won a single season school record 12 games and posted a 12-2 record and a 2.13 ERA enroute to earning Third-Team ABCA/Rawlings and Honorable Mention D3Baseball.com All-American honors, ABCA/Rawlings All-Central Region and a First-Team All-SLIAC honoree. The 12 wins in 2019 were second most in Division III. In 2018, went 10-2 with a 2.99 ERA as he earned Second-Team All-SLIAC honors and was an ABCA/Rawlings All-Central Region selection.
The 6-foot-3 righthander holds single season records for holds school single season records for wins (12 in 2019), innings pitched (105.2 in 2019), runners picked (7 in 2019), fewest walks allowed in nine innings (0.94 in 2019) and games started (15 in 2019).
Mulhearn is one of three graduate students to be named to one of the three CoSIDA Academic All-America teams joining designated hitter Michael Arboleda of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and pitcher Kevin Gould of Endicott College. In addition, he is one of 19 players named to one of the three teams that had GPA's of 3.79 or better, including four players that carry 4.00 cumulative grade point averages.
Elizabethtown senior outfielder Derek Manning, who is a two-time First-Team Academic All-American selection, was named this year's Academic All-America Team Member of the Year.
