WEBSTER GROVES – Webster University Athletics has begun unveiling of its All-Decade Teams from the 2010s as it compiles the best student-athletes across the past 10 seasons (2010-19) in each of Webster's intercollegiate athletic teams. Our 12th team to be unveiled is the 2010-19 All-Decade Men's Tennis Team.
During the decade, the Gorloks captured one regular season St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title in 2013 and finished as runners-up in the SLIAC Tournament three times – 2010, 2011 and 2013. In addition, the Gorloks posted a 107-60 overall record in the decade and went 25-20 in league play, including opening the decade by going a combined 17-3 in SLIAC action from 2010-13. The 2013 team won a school record 19 matches and posted a 19-3 overall record and was 5-0 in league play during the regular season. Webster also won 10 or more matches six times in the decade, including a streak of four consecutive seasons of winning 12 or more matches from 2010-13. In addition, former head coach
Mike Siener, who is currently Webster's men's soccer coach, took home SLIAC Coach of the Year honors in 2013.
Along with their success on the court, that success also brought recognition for Webster's players as the 12 players on the All-Decade Team earned All-SLIAC honors a combined 28 times, including earning first team accolades a combined 10 times. During the last 10 years, two Gorloks - Travis Blair and Juan Granizo - took home SLIAC Newcomer of the Year honors.
Additionally, the members of the All-Decade Team earned a combined nine ITA Scholar Athlete honors and 13 SLIAC Spring All-Academic Team selections. In addition, the members of the All-Decade Team took home two SLIAC Sportsmanship Award accolades and a combined 16 SLIAC Player of the Week honors, including Blair and Ricky Eaves taking home three honors apiece.
Listed below is the 12-member Webster Athletics Men's Tennis Team of the Decade for the 2010s. Players were selected by Siener and are listed alphabetically.
Diego Alarcon (Quito, Ecuador – 2010-13)
Alarcon played the first four years of the decade at Webster and in those four seasons, he was a five-time All-SLIAC selection as he was three-time selection in singles (2010, 2011 and 2013) and a two-time honoree in doubles (2011 and 2013). Along with the five All-SLIAC selections, he earned first team honors in singles in 2010 and doubles in 2013. In addition, he was a two-time SLIAC Spring All-Academic Team selection (2012 and 2013), a two-time ITA Scholar Athlete (2011 and 2012) and earned SLIAC Player of the Week honors two times as he was tabbed once each in 2011 and 2012. Posted a 42-15 career record in singles and a 31-22 career mark in doubles and his 42 singles wins and 31 doubles wins are second most in school history. Went a combined 38-15 at the Top 2 singles spots in the line-up as he was 18-12 at No. 1 singles and 20-3 at No. 2 singles and was 16-15 at No. 1 doubles. His 16 singles wins in 2013 are third most in a single season, while his 14 doubles wins in 2013 are the most in school history. In SLIAC play, went 13-3 in singles and 8-5 in doubles.
Adis Beganovic (Banja Luka, Bosnia – 2010-11)
Berganovic played the first two seasons of the decade and in those two seasons, he was a three-time All-SLIAC selection, including a two-time honoree in singles and was named an All-SLIAC selection in doubles in 2011. Along with his three All-SLIAC selections, Beganovic was a two-time member of the SLIAC Spring All-Academic Team and earned a SLIAC Player of the Week accolade in 2011. In his career, he went 15-4 in singles and 11-7 in doubles. His .789 career singles winning percentage is fifth best in school history, while his 14 singles wins in 2010 (14-3 record) are sixth on the school's single season chart. Played primarily at No. 4 and No. 5 singles as he posted a combined record of 12-3 and was 6-5 at No. 3 doubles. Tallied a 6-0 singles record and a 2-3 record in doubles in SLIAC play.
Travis Blair (Jerseyville, Ill. – 2013-15)
In his three years at Webster, Blair earned All-SLIAC honors as a freshman in 2013 and was named the SLIAC co-Newcomer of the Year in 2013. Along with earning SLIAC co-Newcomer of the Year honors in 2013, he was a two-time ITA Scholar Athlete in 2014 and 2015 and earned a SLIAC All-Academic Team selection in 2015. Additionally, he took home three SLIAC Player of the Week honors in his career and was also named Webster Athletics' Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award winner in 2014-15. As a Gorlok, he posted a 29-12 career record in singles and a 15-24 career record in doubles. His 29 singles wins are tied for sixth in school history, while his 15 singles wins in 2013 (15-3) are tied for fourth most in a single season in school history. During his collegiate career, he played at all six singles positions, including combing for a 14-9 mark at both No. 1 and No. 2 singles and primarily played at the No. 2 doubles spot. In SLIAC play, went 8-4 in singles and 4-5 in doubles action.
Francisco Cortez (Quincy, Ill. – 2012-13)
Cortez was a two-year lettermen for the Gorloks in 2012-13 and in those two years, he was a two-time All-SLIAC selection as he earned honors in singles in 2012 and in doubles in 2013. Along with being a two-time All-SLIAC selection, he was tabbed a First-Team All-SLIAC honoree in doubles in 2013 and was a SLIAC Player of the Week during the 2012 season. In his two years at Webster, he recorded a 22-7 record in singles and a 16-11 record in doubles. His 22 singles wins are eighth on the school's all-time list, while his .909 winning percentage (10-1) in 2012 is second the school's single season chart. Played primarily the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots as he went a combined 21-7 at those two spots and was 15-10 at the No. 1 doubles spot. Tallied a 6-3 record in singles and a 5-2 record in doubles in SLIAC play.
Ricky Eaves (Florissant, Mo. – 2010-13)
Eaves played the first four years of the decade for the Gorloks and in those first four years, he earned six All-SLIAC selections as he earned four honors in singles (2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013) and two in doubles (2011 and 2012). In addition, he was named a two-time First-Team All-SLIAC selection in singles in 2012 and 2013 and a First-Team All-SLIAC honoree in doubles in 2012. Additionally, he was a three-time SLIAC Player of the Week as he took home honors in 2010, 2012 and 2013. Eaves holds the school's all-time record for both singles wins (43) and doubles wins (35) and also holds the school's single season mark for singles wins with 18 in 2013. He posted a 43-11 career record in singles, including a school record 20 wins at No. 3 singles as he went 20-3 at that position in his career and his .796 winning percentage in singles is fourth on the school's single season chart. Posted a 23-9 at No. 2 doubles and his 13 doubles wins (13-3) in 2012 are tied for second on the school's single-season chart. In SLIAC play, went 15-1 in singles and 11-2 in doubles action.
Juan Granizo (Quito, Ecuador – 2014, '16)
During his two year Gorlok career, Granizo was a two-time All-SLIAC selection in singles and earned SLIAC Newcomer of the Year honors in 2014. In addition to his All-SLIAC honor and his SLIAC Newcomer of the Year accolade, Granizo was a two-time ITA Scholar Athlete and earned a spot in the SLIAC Spring All-Academic Team in 2016. Additionally, he was a SLIAC Player of the Week in 2014 and took home the Webster Athletics' Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in 2015-16. In his career, he posted a 21-5 record in singles and a 14-15 record in doubles. His 21 career singles wins are tied for ninth on the school's all-time list and he is one 12 Gorloks in program history to win at least 20 career singles matches. Granizo posted an .846 winning percentage (11-2) in singles in 2016 and that is the fifth best single season singles winning percentage in school history. He played primarily the No. 1 singles spot as he went 17-4 and was 12-13 at the No. 1 doubles spot. In SLIAC play, he went 7-1 in singles and 3-4 in doubles action.
Charlie McGhee (Waterloo, Ill. – 2016-19)
Playing in the final four years of the decade, McGhee earned All-SLIAC honors in singles as a freshman in 2016. Along with his All-SLIAC honor, he took home the SLIAC All-Sportsmanship Award in 2019 and was a SLIAC Player of the Week in 2019. In his career as a Gorlok, McGhee, who was also a goalkeeper on the men's soccer team, posted a 34-20 mark in singles and was 19-31 in doubles. His 34 singles wins are third most in the program's history, while his 19 doubles wins are fourth most in school history. Went a combined 20-18 at No. 2 and No. 3 singles and was also 1-0 at both No. 1 and No. 2 singles, 4-0 at No. 5 singles and 8-2 at No. 6 singles. Additionally, he was 2-5 at No. 1 doubles, 13-17 at No. 2 doubles and 4-9 at No. 3 doubles. Posted a 10-6 mark in singles and a 2-11 mark in doubles in SLIAC play.
Riley Muren (O'Fallon, Ill. – 2018-present)
The only current member of the Gorloks on the All-Decade Team, Muren had his senior campaign in 2020 cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but he was an All-SLIAC selection in singles as a junior in 2019. In addition to his All-SLIAC honoree in 2019, he has been a five-time SLIAC Player of the Year as he earned the honor three times in 2020 and once each in 2019 and 2018. Since his arrival at Webster from Illinois-Springfield in 2018, Muren, who will return to compete in the 2020 season, has posted a 29-14 record in singles and an 18-22 mark in doubles. During the shortened 2020 campaign, he went 10-2 in singles, including a 9-0 mark at No. 1 singles and was 6-3 in doubles. His 29 career singles wins are tied for sixth on the school's all-time list, while his 18 doubles wins are fifth on the all-time list. Has went 4-4 in singles and 3-5 in doubles in SLIAC play.
Austin Nation (Oklahoma City, Okla. – 2018-20)
Playing the last three years, including the final two years of the decade, Nation was an ITA Scholar Athlete and a member of the SLIAC Spring All-Academic Team in 2019. In his time as a Gorlok, he posted a 19-21 record in singles and a 17-19 record in doubles. During the shortened 2020 season, Nation went 5-3 at No. 2 singles and combined to post a 6-2 mark in doubles, including going 3-1 at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Posted a 10-13 career record at No. 1 doubles and a 7-6 career mark in No. 2 doubles. Went 2-6 in singles and 1-5 in doubles in his career in SLIAC play.
Trent Purnell (Marion, Ill. – 2015-17)
Purnell lettered for three seasons as a Gorlok from 2015-17 and in those three seasons, he recorded a career 21-16 record in singles and a 13-24 career record in doubles. His 21 career singles wins are tied for ninth on the school's career chart. Played at four of the six singles positions as a Gorlok and went 5-6 at No. 2 singles, 7-3 at No. 3 singles, 8-5 at No. 4 singles and 1-2 at No. 5 singles. Additionally, in doubles, he was 3-10 at No. 1 doubles and 9-14 at No. 2 doubles in his career. Went 6-6 in singles and 3-7 in doubles in his career in SLIAC play.
Josh Sellmeyer (St. Louis, Mo. – 2010-13)
Sellmeyer is the third member of the All-Decade Team that played the first four years of the decade for the Gorloks as he was tabbed a four-time All-SLIAC selection as he earned two honors each in singles (2012 and 2013) and doubles (2011 and 2013). Along with being a four-time All-SLIAC selection, he was a two-time First-Team All-SLIAC selection in singles in 2012 and 2013 and a First-Team All-SLIAC honoree in doubles in 2013. In addition, he was three-time member of the SLIAC Spring All-Academic Team (2011, 2012 and 2013) and was an ITA Scholar Athlete in 2012. Additionally, he was named to the SLIAC All-Sportsmanship Team in 2013. In his four years as a Gorlok, Sellmeyer, who was also named to the 2010s All-Decade Men's Soccer Team, posted a 30-3 career record in singles and was 25-7 in doubles. His 30 career singles wins (30-3) are fifth most in school history, while his .909 career singles winning percentage is tops in the program's history. Along with holding the school record for career singles winning percentage, he also holds the mark for career doubles winning percentage as he posted a mark 78.1 percent and went 25-7 in doubles. He is third and fourth on the school's single season doubles win chart as he won 13 matches in 2013 and 12 matches in 2012 respectively and went a perfect 13-0 in singles in 2012. Earned 19 of his 25 doubles win in his career at the No. 3 spot as he was 19-6 and posted a combined 22-2 record at No. 4 and No. 5 singles in his career. Recorded an 8-1 mark in singles and a 7-1 record in doubles in SLIAC play.
Augustine Villalba (Quito, Ecuador – 2010-13)
The fourth member of the All-Decade Team that played the first four years of the decade for the Gorloks as he was a three-time All-SLIAC selection as he was two-time selection in doubles in 2011 and 2013 and was tabbed a selection in singles in 2013. Along with earning three All-SLIAC selections, he took home a First-Team All-SLIAC accolade as a senior in 2013. Along with his three All-SLIAC selections, he was a three-time SLIAC Spring All-Academic Team honoree (2011, 2012 and 2013), an ITA Scholar Athlete honoree in 2012 and a two-time SLIAC Player of the Week as he won the honor in both 2011 and 2013. In his four year career, he recorded a 32-11 record in singles and was 15-22 in doubles. His 32 career singles wins are fourth on the school's all-time list, while his 17 singles wins (17-4) in 2013 is second on the school's single season chart. Went a combined 25-6 at No. 2 and No. 3 singles and was also 5-4 at No. 1 singles. In addition, he was 11-16 at No. 1 doubles and also went 3-4 at No. 2 doubles and 1-0 at No. 3 doubles. Posted an 8-3 career mark in singles and a 5-3 mark in doubles in SLIAC play.
