JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this evening when they traveled to Jacksonville, Illinois, to take on the Illinois College Lady Blues in a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks were able to defeat the Lady Blues by a final score of 94-70 to improve to 4-0 on the season. This is the first time in program history that the Gorloks have started the season 4-0.
Webster played well in this one as they went 40-for-73 (54.8%) from the floor and 3-for-13 (23.1%) from behind the arc. They forced the Lady Blue's to turn the ball over 34 times in the game while turning those turnovers into 37 points on the offensive end. The Gorloks also outrebounded Illinois College by a final count of 34-29 while racking up 20 assists on the night.
The Gorloks came out in the first quarter and had a tough time getting their shots to fall early. They settled in as the quarter progressed and were able to take an 8-7 lead midway through the frame. Illinois College retook the lead over the next couple of possessions, but a 17-11 run to end the period put Webster up 27-22 heading into the second. The Gorloks carried over that momentum into the second and held a 36-26 lead with six minutes to play in the half. The Lady Blues were able to cut the lead back down to four, but ultimately Webster would take a 44-38 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Webster came out of the locker room and quickly extended their lead to 12 in the first two minutes of the third quarter. Illinois College bounced back and cut the lead to single digits, but a 26-13 run to end the period put the Gorloks up 78-57 heading into the fourth. Webster was able to extend their lead to as many as 26 in the final frame and cruised to their fourth win of the season.
Addison Beussink led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a team high 17 points to go along with five rebounds and three assists. In addition,
Julie Baudendistel finished with 13 points,
Naomi Johnson finished with 11 points and a team high five assists, and
Bethany Lancaster added 10 points to round out the top performers for Webster.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, November 20
th when they play host to Hendrix (Ark.) College for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to tip-off at 6 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
