Gorloks Fall to Centre in Webster Classic

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Webster University men's basketball team was back in action when they played host to Centre (Ky.) College in their final game of the 2021 Webster Classic. The Gorloks fell to the Colonels by a final score of 72-59 to fall to 1-4 on the season. With the win, the Colonels improve to 2-3 on the year.

The Gorloks shot the ball well in this one as they went 25-for-52 (48.1%) from the floor and 5-for-18 (27.8%) from behind the arc. They finished with 30 rebounds in the game while forcing the Colonels to turn the ball over eight times. Webster did most of their scoring in the paint as they finished with 34 points in the paint compared to 26 from Centre.

Webster got off to a great start in this one as they jumped out to an early 6-2 lead. The Colonels settled in over the next few minutes and were able to tie the score at six, but a 7-0 run from the Gorloks put them up 13-6 in the contest. Webster held a lead for most of the first half, but the Colonels were able to take their first lead of the game with six minutes to play in the period. They grew their lead to as many as six late in the half and took a 35-32 lead into the locker room.

The Colonels came out of the locker room and quickly extended their lead back out to six. They continued to push the tempo over the next few minutes and were able to grow their lead to 14 midway through the frame. Webster quickly cut the lead back down to single digits, but another run from Centre put them up 17 late in the contest. The Gorloks did their best to get back into the game but the Colonels closed them out down the stretch to solidify the win.

The Gorloks had four players finish with double figures including Markus Becton who finished with a team high 13 points. In addition to Becton, Nate Jones finished with 11 points while Stephen Hawkins and Mark Moore both added 10. Wynne Brown Jr. dished out a team high five assists and Karl Moore Jr. brought down a team high six rebounds to round of the top performers for Webster.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, the all-tournament team was announced. For their efforts over the last two games, Jaxon Althaus (Westminster), Tre Kempker (Westminster), Jai Love (Dallas), Jalen Williams (Centre), and Markus Becton (Webster) were all recognized. In addition, Dustin Gerald (Centre) was named the tournaments Most Valuable Player.

The Gorloks will return to the court on Tuesday, November 23rd when they travel across town to take on the 18th ranked Washington (Mo.) University Bears in a rematch of last weeks upset. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
