ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action tonight when they traveled across town to Washington (Mo.) University to take on the 18
th ranked Bears in a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks, who defeated the Bears last week, were unable to beat Washington University in two straight games as they fell by a final score of 79-47 to fall to 1-5 on the season. With the win, the Bears improve to 3-1 on the year.
Webster had a tough time scoring the ball in this one as they went 18-for-57 (31.6%) from the floor and 5-for-14 (35.7%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded 46-24 and turned the ball over 20 times compared to just 11 from the Bears. The Gorloks also finished with eight blocked shots and seven steals in the contest.
Webster came out in the first half and jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. The Bears battled back and tied the score at 14, and then went on a 14-2 run to take a 28-16 lead with just under six minutes to play in the half. The Gorloks picked it up down the final stretch of the half and were able to cut the lead to 38-31 at the break.
Webster came out of the locker room and were able to score the first two points of the second half to cut the Bears lead to five. However, Washington University answered by going on an 11-0 run to take a 49-33 lead with just over 16 minutes to play in the game. Webster had a tough time scoring the ball as the half progressed and the Bears were able to grow their lead to 30 with 7:26 left to play in the contest. The Gorloks tried to get back into the game but the damage had been done as the Bears closed them out to win their third game of the season.
Stephen Hawkins led the way for the Gorloks as he finished with a team high nine points.
Markus Becton and
Karl Moore Jr. also played well as Becton finished with eight points and a team high six rebounds while Moore Jr. finished with eight points and five blocked shots.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, November 27
th when they travel to Columbia, Missouri, to take on the Columbia (Mo.) College Cougars in an exhibition game. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
