Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Johnson Hits Six Threes in Win

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Webster University women's basketball team was back in action when they played host to the Augustana (Ill.) College Vikings in a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Vikings for the first time since 2015 as they won by a final score of 81-74 to improve to 7-0 for the first time in school history. With the loss, the Vikings fall to 5-2 on the year.

The Gorloks shot the ball well in this one as they went 26-for-73 (35.6%) from the floor and 10-for-22 (45.5%) from behind the arc. They forced the Vikings to turn the ball over 35 times in the contest while turning those turnovers into 30 points on the other end. They also dished out 16 assists while only turning the ball over 16 times.

Webster came out in the first half and jumped out to an early 10-4 lead. The Vikings settled in as the quarter progressed and were able to cut the lead to three, but a 4-0 run to end the frame put the Gorloks up 18-11 heading into the second.

Augustana started the second on an 8-1 run to tie the score at 19 and held a five point advantage with just under two minutes to play in the half. They continued to play well in the final minutes of the frame and took a 26-23 lead into the locker room.

The Gorloks bounced back to start the third quarter and quickly tied the score at 31. The game went back and forth over the next few minutes, but with the score tied at 35 the Gorloks went on a 9-4 run to take a 44-39 lead. Webster continued to push the tempo down the final stretch of the quarter and were able to take a 61-43 lead into the final period. The Vikings were able to cut the lead to as many as five late in the game but that was as close as they would get as Webster closed them out down the stretch to solidify the win.

Naomi Johnson led the way for Webster as she finished with a career high 27 points after knocking down six three point shots. In addition to Johnson, Hanna Cottrell finished with 11 points, Bethany Lancaster finished with 11 points, and Addison Beussink added 10 points to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.

The Gorloks are back in action on Tuesday, December 7th when they host the Baptist Bible (Mo.) College Patriots in a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
