ANDERSON, Ind. – This afternoon the Webster University women's basketball team kicked off their season when they traveled to Anderson, Indiana, to take on the Anderson (Ind.) University Ravens in a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks were able to defeat the Ravens by a final score of 74-47 to improve to 1-0 on the season. With the loss, the Ravens fall to 0-1 on the year.
The Gorloks went 30-for-80 (37.5%) from the floor while going 3-for-18 (16.7%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Ravens by a final count of 60-48 while bringing down 23 boards.
They played tough defense as they held the Ravens to just 26.2 percent shooting from the floor and 12.5 percent from behind the arc. They also forced the Ravens to turn the ball over 25 times while turning that into 24 points on the offensive end.
The Gorloks came out in the first quarter and took it to the Ravens early as they were able to jump out to a 10-2 lead in the first five minutes of the period. They continued to play well as the quarter progressed and held a 19-6 lead heading into the second. Anderson bounced back and were able to cut the lead to six, but another run from the Gorloks put them up 35-17 late in the half. The Ravens did their best to cut into the lead before the break, but Webster was able to take a 37-21 lead into the locker room.
Naomi Johnson led all scorers with 12 points at the break.
Webster came out in the third quarter and quickly extended their lead to 21 in the first two minutes of the half. They continued to push the temp as the quarter progressed and held a 55-31 lead at the end of the frame. They were able to push their lead to as many as 33 late in the game and never let the Ravens back into the contest as they cruised to their first win of the season.
Addison Beussink led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a game high 19 points and a game high 15 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.
Naomi Johnson also had a nice start to the season as she finished with 14 points in the contest. In addition,
Bethany Lancaster finished with 12 points and
Kate Rolfes finished with seven points while
Lauryn Freeman and
Jordyn Grimes each dished out three assists.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Friday, November 12
th when they host Dominican (Ill.) University for their first game of the Webster University Tip-Off Classic. The game is set to start at 8 p.m. in Grant's Gymnasium.
