JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Webster University men's basketball team kicked off their season tonight when they traveled to Jacksonville, Illinois, to take on the Illinois College Blueboys in a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks, who were picked to finish third in the SLIAC, were defeated by a final score of 76-69 in overtime to fall to 0-1 on the season. The win moves Illinois College to 2-0 on the year.
The Gorloks went 26-for-71 from the floor and 5-for-18 from behind the arc. They held the Blueboys to 25-for-58 from the floor while allowing them to knock down five of their 13 three pointers. The Gorloks turned the ball over 12 times in the game while forcing Illinois College to turn the ball over 14 times. Webster turned those 14 turnovers into 19 points on the offensive end.
The Gorloks came out in the first half and got off to a good start as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first few minutes of the game. Illinois College settled into the game over the next few minutes and went on a 14-3 run to take a 14-7 lead with 14 minutes to play in the half. Webster battled back and cut the lead to three midway through the half, but another run from the Blueboys put them up eight. Despite being down, Webster clawed their way back into the game and tied with score at 32 in the final minute before taking a 34-32 lead into the locker room.
In the second half of the game, both sides came out of the locker room and had a tough time finding the bottom of the basket. The Blueboys picked it up as the half progressed and used a 6-0 run to take a 43-36 lead midway through the frame. They were able to push their lead to as many as nine, but the Gorloks once again clawed their way back into the contest and tied the score with two seconds to play to send the game to overtime.
Webster took their first lead since early in the second half with just under four minutes to play in overtime. However, the Blueboys quickly tied the score at 65 and then ended the game on an 11-4 run to solidify the win.
Wynne Brown, Jr. led all scorers as he finished with a game high 22 points.
Karl Moore also had a great game as he finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the year. In addition,
Jacob Witaschek finished with 10 points while
Bryce Woolridge and
Markus Becton each added seven.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, November 13
th when they travel across town to take on the Missouri Baptist University Spartans in a nonconference matchup. The game is set to tip-off at 6 p.m.
