ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Webster University men's basketball team took the court when they played host to the Carthage (Wis.) College Firebirds in a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks fell to the Firebirds by a final score of 89-72 to fall to 1-8 on the season. With the win, the Firebirds improve to 6-5 on the year.
The Gorloks shot the ball well in this one as they went 28-for-57 (49.1%) from the floor and 3-for-9 (33.3%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded 43-30 but only turned the ball over seven times in the contest. They forced the Firebirds to turn the ball over nine times and turned those nine turnovers into nine points on the other end.
Webster came out in the first half and found themselves trailing 14-6 in the first five minutes of the game. The Firebirds continued to push the tempo over the next few minutes of the half and held an 11 points advantage with 7:30 to play in the period. Carthage shot the lights out of the basketball from three-point range as half progressed and grew their lead to 54-40 at the break.
In the second half, the Firebirds came out of the locker room and quickly extended their lead to 19 in the first two minutes of the frame. The Gorloks were able to cut the lead back down to 14 over the next few minutes, but an 8-2 run gave Carthage a 72-52 lead midway through the half. Webster did their best to get back into the contest down the final stretch but the Firebirds were able to close them out to solidify the win.
Jason Coleman led the way for the Gorloks as he finished with a team high 15 points in the contest. In addition to Coleman,
Karl Moore Jr. finished with 10 points and a team high nine rebounds while
Mark Moore finished with 10 points.
Bryce Woolridge and
Markus Becton each added nine points to round out the top performers for Webster.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Thursday, December 30
th when they host Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology for their first game of the 2021 Big Bend Classic. The game is set to tip-off at 8 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
