ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This evening the Webster University men's basketball team was back in action when they played host to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.) Fightin' Engineers in their first game of the 2021 Big Bend Classic. The Gorloks fell to the Fightin' Engineers by a final score of 73-56 to fall to 1-9 on the season. With the win, Rose-Hulman improves to 7-3 on the year.
Webster had a tough time scoring the ball tonight as they went 21-for-62 (33.9%) from the floor and 4-for-20 (20.0%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded 39-32 and turned the ball over nine times. They forced Rose-Hulman to turn the ball over 11 times and turned those 11 turnovers into six points on the other end. The Gorloks also dished out seven assists on the night.
Webster came out in the first half and jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the first few minutes of the game. The Fightin' Engineers settled in as the half progressed and answered with a 17-2 run to take a 19-8 lead in the contest. Webster cut the lead back down to single digits, but another run from Rose-Hulman put them up 17 with five minutes to play in the half. The Gorloks struggled to find the bottom of the basket down the final stretch of the half and Rose-Hulman took a 42-25 lead into the locker room.
The Gorloks turned up the pressure to start the second half and cut the Rose-Hulman lead to nine with 10:20 to play in the game. The Fightin' Engineers answered with an 11-2 run over the next couple minutes and held a 58-40 lead late in the contest. Webster did their best to get back into the game down the final stretch but Rose-Hulman held them off to solidify the win.
Karl Moore Jr. led the way for the Gorloks as he finished with 10 points, a game high 14 rebounds, and a game high four blocks for his fourth double-double of the year.
Malcolm Logue also had a nice game as he finished with a team high 13 points. In addition,
Jason Coleman added 10 points,
Wynne Brown Jr. had eight points, and
Mark Moore finished with seven points to round out the top performers for Webster.
The Gorloks are back in action tomorrow, December 31
st when they play host to the Monmouth (Ill.) College Fighting Scots in their final game of the 2021 Webster Classic. The game has been moved up to 2 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
