WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University Women's Basketball extracted some revenge here Friday evening as the Gorloks put three players in double figures, including a double-double from junior forward
Addison Beussink (Jackson, Mo./Saxony Lutheran) en route posting a 65-49 win over Greenville University in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Grant Gymnasium.
The win came nearly 18 days after the Gorloks opened the 2020-21 season with a 71-66 loss to the Panthers on their home court.Â
Friday's victory improved the Gorloks to 4-1 overall and 4-1 in the SLIAC and also extended its home court win streak to 13 consecutive games, which is the sixth longest active streak in Divsion III women's basketball. Greenville fell to 4-9 overall and 2-3 in the league.Â
Beussink, who recorded who second double-double of the season and 18th of the career, finished the night with a career-high tying 23 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. She had 19 points and nine rebounds in the second half to help the Gorloks turn a 27-20 halftime lead into a 16 point victory.
In addition to Beussink, the other two Gorloks to finish in double figures were sophomore forward
Julie Baudendistel (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) as she tallied 13 points and added eight boards, while junior guard
Hannah Cottrell (Steelville, Mo./Steelville) finished with 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.Â
Webster took control of Friday's game in the third quarter as after watching Greenville open the quarter 10 of the first 19 points to pull within 36-30 with 3:02 left in the period, the Gorloks would answer with an 11-4 run to push in front 45-34 with 24 seconds left. The run was keyed by seven points from Beussink as she scored 13 of her 19 second half points in the quarter.
Greenville would stop WU's run on a basket by Nailah Ray with 16 seconds left, but freshman forward
Bethany Lancaster (Buffalo, Mo./Buffalo) would 1-of-2 free throws with six seconds left to give WU a 46-36 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Gorloks would then open the fourth quarter on a 13-0 run to push its lead to 59-36 with 5:47 left in the game. Beussink and Baudendistel combined for 10 of those 13 points.
After Payten Morris scored Greenville's first basket of the quarter at the 5:33 mark, the Gorloks would answer with a 7-2 run capped by two free throws from freshman forward
Emily Ederer (Doniphan, Mo./Doniphan) to give the Gorloks a 65-40 lead with 1:51 remaining in the contest. That 25 point lead was the largest of the game for the Gorloks.Â
Greenville, who has now lost four of its five games to the Gorloks, would score the final nine points of the game to set the final margin.
Morris paced Greenville with 10 points, while Madelyn Stephen added nine points and Ray scored eight points for the Panthers, who have now lost three consecutive games on the season.Â
The Gorloks held Greenville's Emily Reinneck to just five points on the night. In the team's first meeting on Feb. 24, 2021, Reinneck posted a double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds.Â
Greenville scored the first four points of the game and led 8-6 when the Gorloks would close the opening 10 minutes on on a 5-2 run to hold an 11-10 lead after the first quarter.Â
The second quarter belonged to the Gorloks as they outscored the Panthers, 16-10, including holding GU without a point for nearly four minutes in the quarter as Webster reeled off 10 straight points to lead 27-14 with 2:33 left in the quarter.Â
Webster finished the night shooting 41 percent from the field and 30 percent from the 3-point line, while Greenville shot 33 percent from the floor and 19 percent (3-for-16) from the 3-point line. In the first game, Greenville shot 35 percent from downtown.Â
The Gorloks held a 37-35 edge on the boards and forced 17 turnovers that led to 20 points. Webster committed 14 turnovers and had 10 steals.Â
Both teams were strong on the free throw line as Webster shot 86 percent (18-for-21) from the line and Greenville was 8-for-10 for 80 percent.
Webster will return to action next Tuesday, March 16 as they travel to Carlinville, Ill., for a 5:30 p.m. SLIAC contest at Blackburn. As a reminder, per SLIAC rules, no fans are allowed to attend any indoor sporting event in the league this season.
