ELLISVILLE, Mo. - Playing its third game in less than 24 hours here Saturday, the Webster Softball team faced off against 12th-ranked Transylvania at the Ellisville Athletic Association Complex and the Gorloks proved to be tough foe for the Pioneers as they picked up a 3-0 shutout win against the Gorloks.
With the setback, Webster falls to 2-1, while Transylvania improved to 4-0 on the season.
The first two innings is what was Webster's undoing on Saturday as they allowed three runs and five hits over the two frames to the Pioneers and then pitch a shutout the remainder of the game.
While Transylvania finished the game with nine hits, the Gorloks collected two hits against Transylvania pitcher Kameron Bowling, who also recorded six strikeouts and walked three in the win.
Webster's two hits were a double by fifth-year senior
Avery Boccella (Gilbert, Ariz./Trinidad State in the second and a one-out single in the seventh by freshman catcher
Paige Thomas (Emporia, Kan./Emporia).
After senior pitcher
Kirbie Mendenhall (Robinson, Ill./Parkland College) struggled in the circle as she pitched one-plus innings and allowed five hits and three runs, while walking two and striking out none, fellow senior pitcher and former teammate at Parkland College,
Morgan Parrish (Lawrenceville, Ill./Parkland College) would come in the game and keep the Pioneers from scoring as over the final six innings, she tossed six shutout innings and allowed four hits and had one strikeout.
In the first, Transylvania used two hits, including a two-out home run over the left field fence by Carson Murray off of Mendenhall.
The Pioneers' lead grew to 3-0 on the top of the second as Becky Messina delivered a two-run single up the middle that chased Mendenhall from the game. Parrish would come in and prevent further damage and leave two runners on base.
Boccella would give the Gorloks their first hit of the day on her double to right center with two outs.
Transylvania would put two runners on base in the fifth against Parrish with two outs on back-to-back singles by Taylor Stamps and Allyson O'Dell, but would leave those runners stranded after she forced Annie Schuck to fly out to right to end the inning.
Parrish would allow a one-out single in the seventh, but would not allow that runner to score to keep the score at 3-0.
In the seventh, Thomas reached on a one-out single up the middle, but she would be erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Boccella. Freshman
Shelbi Patterson (Sesser, Ill./Christopher) would pinch run for Boccella and record a stolen base, before Bowling struck out freshman leftfielder
Reese Waggoner (Centennial, Colo./Eaglecrest) to end the game.
Murray, Schuck and Stamp each had two hits for the Pioneers.
Webster is scheduled to return to the field this coming Wednesday, March 10 as they are scheduled to travel to Jacksonville, Ill., for a doubleheader at Illinois College, which is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
