CLAYTON, Mo. - Webster University women's soccer was outshot 13-6 here Saturday evening as the Gorloks fell 2-0 to Fontbonne University in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Centene Stadium.
With the setback, Webster falls to 3-3 overall and 3-3 in the league and it halted Webster's chances to win its ninth straight regular season SLIACÂ title, while Fontbonne improves to 8-0 overall and 8-0 in the SLIACÂ and earns at least a share of the regular season league title with one week left in the regular season.
The shutout was the first for the Gorloks since falling 3-0 to Wheaton (Ill.) College in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Division III Tournament and the first in league play since Fontbonne posted a 1-0 win over the Gorloks at World Wide Technology Soccer Park on Oct. 19, 2019.Â
Despite the loss and getting outshot, the Gorloks maintained possession of the ball 57 percent of the time against the Griffins.Â
Sophomore forward
Mackenzie O'Neal (Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) took four of Webster's six shots and had the team's lone shot on goal, which came in the 54th minute of Saturday's match.Â
The Gorloks other two shots were taken by freshman forward
Jennifer Munger (Loganville, Ga./Grayson) and senior midfileder
Payton Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East).Â
Fontbonne got on the scoreboard early in the 36th minute as Molly Kovarik scored off an assist by Krystal Kohenskey to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.Â
Early in the second half, O'Neal took three consecutive shots, but first shot was wide, while the second one was blocked and the third one was saved by Fontbonne goalkeeper Mary Beers.Â
In the 58th minute, Kovarik scored her ninth goal of the season off a pass from Kohenskey to give Fontbonne a 2-0 lead.Â
Freshman
Heather Jones (Bradenton, Fla./Florida Collegiate) took the loss in goal for the Gorloks as she fell to 0-1-0 on the season and was playing for sophomore goalkeper
Taryn Banfield (Plano, Texas/Plano East), who suffered an injury late in the first half last Thursday in a 4-1 home win over Spalding.Â
Jones allowed two goals and made three saves,Â
Beers (8-0-0) picked up the win in goal for Fontbonne as she made one save in 90 minutes of action.Â
Kovarik took six of FBU's 11 shots and four of its five shots on goal. In addition to Kovarik, Kierstyn Weaver added three shots in the win.Â

Fontbonne also held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks and held a 7-6 edge in fouls.Â
Webster returns to action this coming Wednesday, April 14 as they travel to Fulton, Mo., for a 5 p.m. SLIAC match against Westminster (Mo.) College.Â
