FENTON, Mo. - Due to thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rain that hit the St. Louis Metro area here Wednesday evening forced Webster University to postpone both its home soccer matches that were both in the second half against Spalding University at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
The women's match, which Webster was leading 3-1 thanks three first half goals from junior forward
Jordan Lande (Sachse, Texas/Sachse)Â was in the 61st minute when lightning struck the area and forced nearly an hour delay that wouldn't allow the match to be continued due to the three hour rule that says that once a match begins, it must be completed within three hours of its starting time. Wednesday's match started at 4:45 p.m. and was officially postponed on or around 7:45 p.m.
With the postponement, the two teams agreed to reschedule the match for Thursday, April, 8 beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday's match will start from scratch as all the stats from Wednesday's match do not court since the match hadn't reached 70 minutes, which is when a match is considered official.Â
Once it was determined that the women's match wouldn't be completed, the men's team began to warm-up and were able to start their match around 8:15 p.m. and had played nearly 48 scoreless minutes when another storm hit the area that caused a delay about 9:15 due to lightning and after about 70 minutes with lightning still in the area, it was decided to postpone the match.Â
With the postponement, a make-up date for the match was yet determined according to Webster head coach
Mike Siener, but with just 10 days left in the regular season, it might be hard to find a new date for the match.Â
While the Webster women will play on Thursday against Spalding, the Gorlok men will next return to action on Saturday, April 10 as they travel to Clayton High School for a 7 p.m. match against Fontbonne University.
