FENTON, Mo. - The Webster women's soccer team handed Spalding University its first loss of the season here Thursday evening as the Gorloks posted a 4-1 triumph over the Golden Eagles at World Wide Technology Soccer Park.
Thursday's win came nearly 24 hours as lightning and inclement weather forced the postponement of Wednesday's match against Spalding with the Gorloks in the 61st minute. When the match was postponed, the Gorloks held a 3-1 lead over Spalding, but Thursday's match was started from scratch.
With the victory, Webster extended its win streak to three straight games as their record moved to 3-2 overall and 3-2 in the SLIAC, while Spalding fell to 4-1 overall and 4-1 in the SLIAC. The win also helped the Gorloks avenge a 4-3 loss to the Golden Eagles in Louisville, Ky., on March 17.
Early in the 15th minute, the Gorloks got on the scoreboard as senior midfielder Payton Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) scored her third goal of the season as scored off a free kick to give the Gorloks a 1-0 lead.
The Gorloks lead grew to 2-0 late in the 22nd minute as freshman forward Jennifer Munger (Loganville, Ga./Grayson) scored an unassisted goal off a rebound from five yards out. The goal was Munger's second of the year.
About three minutes later, junior midfielder Addison Hanusek (Belleville, Ill./Belleville West) scored her first goal of the season as she connected on a header off a corner kick from Williams to give the Gorloks a 3-0 lead.
Spalding avoided a shutout when Faith Rutherford scored an unassisted goal late in the 40th minute to cut Webster's lead to 3-1.
About five minutes into the second half, Williams scored her second goal of the match as she took a pass from junior midfielder Jordan Bilyeu (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) and connected from 18 yards out in the bottom right corner of the goal.
On the night, Webster was outshot 12-11 as the Gorloks held a 7-5 edge in shots in the first half, while Spalding outshot Webster, 7-4 in the second half.
Williams took four of Webster's shots with all four of them being on goal. In addition to Williams, Munger took two shots and had two shots on goal in the win.
Dori Emig took six shots and put four of those shots on goal, while Baeli Young and Rutherford each had two shots.
The Gorloks held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks on the night.
Freshman goalkeeper Heather Jones (1-0) earned the win in net for the Gorloks as she replaced sophomore Taryn Banfield (Plano, Texas/Plano East) with 59 seconds left in the first half after being knocked to the ground and then apparently was kicked in the head accidently after falling to the ground. The injury forced a 15 minute delay for the paramedics to arrive to treat and take Banfield off the field. Jones finished the match with three saves, while Banfield allowed a goal and recorded two saves.
Jordan Schneider (4-1) took the loss in the net for Spalding as she allowed four goals and made five saves.
The Gorloks will look to make it four straight wins as they travel to Clayton High School for a 5 p.m. SLIAC match on Saturday, April 10 against Fontbonne (7-0 overall, 7-0 SLIAC).
