GREENVILLE, Ill. – Webster University won seven events and finished as the runner-up in five other events here Saturday as the Gorloks took home second place out of eight teams at the 2021 St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Track and Field Championships at Francis Field at the John M. Stahl Complex.
At this year's championship meet that was hosted by Greenville University, the Gorloks scored 179 points to finish 84 points behind champion Greenville, who tallied 263 points to snap Webster's two-reign as the SLIAC Champion. The title was the second for Greenville since reinstating track and field in 2017.
Finishing behind Greenville and Webster was Fontbonne in third place as the Griffins scored 115 points, while Principia was fourth with 66 points and Westminster was fifth with 45 points. Iowa Wesleyan placed sixth with 27 points and Eureka was seventh with two points, Spalding competed in the meet, but did not score any points.
In this year's meet, Webster won seven of 20 events, including winning the mid-distance (800 and 1,500-meters) and long distance runs (5,000 and 10,000-meters) and repeated as the league champ in the 4-x-400 meter relay. Webster's other two gold medals came in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase and 400-meter hurdles.
Leading the way for the Gorloks was sophomore
Danielle Schultz (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East) as she won three gold medals to become the third consecutive Gorlok to earn SLIAC Women's Track Athlete of the Year honors. At the championship meet, Schultz won the 800-meters with a Webster season best time of 2:21.98, while also winning the 1,500-meters in a time of 4:55.41, which set a new championship record. The time bettered the old record of 4:56.74 set by Webster's
Minnell Fundora in 2019. Schultz's third gold medal came in the 4-x-400 meter relay as she ran the anchor leg on the championship relay team that ran a time of 4:16.77. Webster has won both the 800 and 1,500-meter runs the past three seasons as
Meredith Sowers won back-to-back gold medals in the 800-meters in 2018 and 2019, while Fundora was the league champion in the 1,500-meters in both 2018 and 2019.
In addition to Schultz, the other members of the championship 4-x-400 meter relay team were junior
Jordan Lande (Sachse, Texas/Sachse), sophomore
Micah Barnes (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) and senior
Vanessa Jones (Orlando, Fla./Lake Minneola). Webster has won the gold medal in the 4-x-400 meter relay at the past three championship meets.
Jones also won an individual gold medal as she was the champion in the 400-meter hurdles with a Webster season best time of 1:12.80 and she becomes the fourth straight Gorlok to win a gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles joining Sowers in 2019 and Meghan Illig in both 2017 and 2018. Jones also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.34, was fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 29-11.50 (9.13 meters) and was eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.33.
Sophomore
Kyanne Ruth Williams (St. Louis, Mo./Affton) was the champion in the 3,000-meter Stepplechase as she ran a time of 13:03.26 and was second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:13.08, fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.10 and second in the 10,000-meters with a time of 42:35.34. With her gold medal in the steeplechase, Williams is the first from Webster to win the event.
In the 5,000-meters, junior
Cora Reed (Manchester, Mo./Parkway South), who was the SLIAC Indoor Champion this year in the 3,000-meters, took home the gold medal with a time of 20:17.47. Webster scored 22 points in the event as along with Reed's gold medal, senior
Kalleigh Linthicum (Lake St. Louis, Mo./Timberland) was second with a time of 20:27.99 and freshman
Michelle Grant (Jefferson City, Mo./Jefferson City) was fifth with a time of 22:07.60.
Linthicum took home a gold medal in the 10,000-meters with a Webster season best time of 42:01.50.
Along with Jones' performances in the hurdles, the Gorloks scored 24 points in the 400-meter hurdles and 19 points in the 100-meter hurdles as Williams was second with a time of 1:13.08 and senior
Elena Hutson (Scottsboro, Ala./Scottsboro) was third with a time of 1:16.73 in the 400 hurdles, while Hutson was third (17.95) and Williams (19.10) was fourth in the 100 hurdles.
Another of Webster's runner-up finishes came in the 400-meters as Barnes took home a silver medal in the event with a Webster season best time of 1:04.49. Along with Barnes, Lande was third with a time of 1:04.95, while junior
Megan Bartz (St. Louis, Mo./Lindbergh) was fifth with a time of 1:06.44 and junior
Jenna Stobie (Glen Carbon, Ill./Lindenwood-Belleville) was ninth with a time of 1:14.50.
Barnes was also eighth in the 800-meters with a time of 2:43.70.
In addition to Williams' gold medal in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase, junior
Lindsay Poitras (Imperial, Mo./Fox) was thrd in the event with a time of 13:30.32 and junior
Sady Bayne (Sierra Vista, Ariz./Buena) was fifth with a time of 14:23.81.
Webster's other relay team, the 4-x-100 meter, took home third place honors after running a Webster season best time of 55.38. The members of the relay team were Stobie, Lande, Hutson and Poitras.
Lande placed fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 30-02.25 (9.20 meters) and was seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.18 and sixth in the javelin with a season best mark of 79-03 (24.15 meters).
Freshman
Lilly Aguilar (Whittier, Calif./Whittier) was third in the discus with a Webster season best mark of 101-01 (30.81 meters) and was ninth in the shot put with a mark of 27-08.75 (8.45 meters).
While Schultz was named the SLIAC Track Athlete of the Year, the other individual award winners announced following Saturday's meet was Fontbonne's Madelyn Huffstetter being named the SLIAC Track Newcomer of the Year, while Greenville's Cayden Sharp was the SLIAC Field Athlete of the Year and Westminster's Katy Allen was the SLIAC Field Newcomer of the Year. Greenville took home the SLIAC Coaching Staff of the Year and Fontbonne was named the Team Sportsmanship Award winner.
Meanwhile, the league also announced the members of the SLIAC All-Sportsmanship Team as Webster's representative was Jones.
The Gorloks will return to action next Friday, May 7 as they travel to Terre Haute, Ind., to compete at the Pacesetter Sports Invitational hosted by Indiana State University.
