WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University heads into this week's best-of-three St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Championship Series ranked No. 2 and No. 3 nationally in the latest Perfect Game Division III and D3Baseball.com Top 25 polls that were released this week.
The Gorloks, who will host No. 2 seeded Spalding in the 2021 SLIAC Championship Series beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, May 21 at GCS Credit Union Ballpark in Sauget, Ill., remains ranked No. 2 in this week's Perfect Game poll and jumped one spot from No. 4 to No. 3 in this week's D3Baseball.com poll after going 3-0 and winning their pod of 2021 SLIAC Baseball Tournament. With the three wins, Webster improved its record to 33-6 overall on the season and is now just four victories shy of tying the school's single season record for wins. The single season mark for wins is 38, which was set by the 2018 team.
In fact, the top nine teams in last week's Perfect Game poll remained the same in this week's poll. Webster continues to be ranked behind WashU, who is 28-3 on the season.
Meanwhile, in the D3Baseball.com/NCBWA poll, Webster jumped one spot as they received 548 points and one first place vote to sit 18 points in front of No. 4 ranked Marietta (32-4) and 27 points behind No. 2 ranked Washington & Jefferson (36-1), who earned four first place votes and 575 points. Wisconsin-Whitewater (34-5) fell two spots to No. 5 in this week's poll.
WashU continues to sit atop the D3Baseball.com poll as the Bears earned 618 points and 18 first place votes in the poll voted on by a panel of 25 Sports Information Directors and media members from across the country.
In addition to WashU and Webster, the three other spots in the Top 5 of the Perfect Game poll are filled by Salisbury at No. 3, Wisconsin-Whitewater at No. 4 and North Central (Ill.) at No. 5.
The Gorloks are the lone school from the SLIAC ranked in either of the two national polls, but Spalding (29-13), who won the other pod of the SLIAC Tournament last weekend to advance to the best-of-three championship series, received 11 votes in this week's D3Baseball.com poll and the Golden Eagles are one of 19 teams earning votes this week.
Webster will put its national ranking on the line this weekend as they host the 2021 SLIAC Championship Series. The series will begin with a doubleheader on Friday, May 21 beginning at 5 p.m., with the if necessary game scheduled for Saturday, May 22 at 6 p.m. The winner of the SLIAC Championship Series will earn the league's automatic to the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament.
