BELLEVILLE, Ill. - Webster University made history on Wednesday as the school not only continued its dominance of winning the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Sports Award, but Webster Athletics also earned the SLIAC Sportsmanship Award for the 2020-21 school year and by winning both awards in the same academic year, Webster receives the SLIAC Commissioner's Cup becoming just the second school in conference to receive the award.
The Commissioner's Cup is a traveling trophy and is presented to and held by the school that wins both the All-Sports Trophy and Sportsmanship Award in the same academic year. Westminster is the only other school to receive the SLIAC Commissioner's Cup as they won both the All-Sports and Sportsmanship Awards during the 2015-16 academic year.Â
Webster earns its first-ever SLIAC Sportsmanship Award after winning the Team Sportsmanship Award in four different sports, while also finishing among the top three in sportsmanship an additional three times during the 2020-21 academic year. The Gorloks took home the Team Sportsmanship Awards in women's cross country, men's tennis, women's track and field and men's basketball. First awarded in 2010-11, the SLIAC Sportsmanship Award is presented to the institution that receives the highest combined point total in the voting for the team Sportsmanship Awards.Â
Meanwhile, the Gorloks took home the league's All-Sports Trophy for the fourth consecutive year and 19th time overall in 21 years and the school has won the award 15Â times in the last 17Â years combined as the only year they didn't win was in 2015-16 when they finished as runner-up to Westminster (Mo.), who took home the trophy. There was no SLIAC All-Sports Trophy awarded during the 2019-20 academic year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Â
After winning by 15 points over Greenville to earn the 2018-19 All-Sports Award, Webster's margin this year was a little larger as they scored a total of 131 points to outdistance runner-up Greenville University by 18.5 points as Greenville scored a total of 112.5 points this season. Webster's first place in the All-Sports Trophy standings was buoyed by five first place finishes this year and the Gorloks also finished in the top three in 14 of 17 conference sponsored sports. In addition to their five titles, Webster were runners-up in seven other sports.Â
Finishing behind Webster and Greenville in the All-Sports Trophy was Westminster, who scored 83 points to finish third, while Fontbonne was fourth with 74.5 points and Iowa Wesleyan had its highest finish in the All-Sports Standings as they totaled 67.5 points to finish fifth. Spalding University was sixth with 54 points and Principia, who competed in just seven sports this year, was seventh with 45 points. Eureka College placed eighth with 44.5 points and Blackburn was ninth with 31 points as nine of those 31 points came in men's basketball as the Beavers captured the league's regular season crown.Â
During the 2020-21 sports season, Webster took home SLIAC titles in men's soccer, women's basketball, baseball, men's golf and women's tennis. In addition, the Gorloks were league runners-up for men's cross country, women's cross country, indoor men's track and field, women's soccer, outdoor men's track and field, outdoor women's track and field and softball and was third in volleyball and men's tennis. Â
Along with capturing regular season SLIAC titles in men's soccer, women's basketball and baseball, Webster also won the SLIAC Tournament titles in men's soccer, women's tennis, men's golf and softball and is playing Spalding this weekend at GCS Credit Union Ballpark in Sauget, Ill., in the best-of-three championship series in baseball. In addition, Webster also participated in the NCAA Tournament in men's golf as senior Will Hocker (Grapevine, Texas/University of Oklahoma) was the individual national champion after earning medalist honors by two shots and the Gorloks as a team posted a program-best tie for 15th place overall after making the cut for the second time in school history and will play in the NCAA D-III Softball Tournament this weekend at the Waverly, Iowa Regional hosted by Wartburg College.Â
