Baseball Ranked Sixth, 11th in Final Perfect Game and D3Baseball.com Polls

WEBSTER GROVES - Webster University concluded the 2021 baseball season ranked inside the Top 12 in both of the final national Division III polls that were recently released. 

In this season's final Perfect Game Division III Top 25 poll, Webster finishes the season ranked No. 6, while the Gorloks are ranked 11th in the final NCBWA/D3Baseball.com Top 25 Poll. 

Webster, who finished the season with a 37-8 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the fourth consecutive season and 14th time overall, sits in front of No. 7 Marietta (38-6) and behind No. 5 Adrian (37-10) in the final Perfect Game Division III poll. The Gorloks were ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in the Perfect Game poll most of the season, including being ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll. 

Meanwhile, in the NCBWA/D3Baseball.com poll, Webster earned 344 points to sit 14 points behind No. 10 Johns Hopkins, who advanced to the Division III World Series and 21 points in front of No. 12 Southern Maine, who finished the season with a 34-11 record. Webster entered the NCAA Regionals ranked No. 3 in the final regular season poll.

In the NCAA Decatur, Illinois Regional hosted by Millikin University, the Gorloks went 2-2 as they opened with a 4-1 win over No. 5 seeded Transylvania, before suffering an 8-1 loss to No. 3 seeded Denison (Ohio) in a winner's bracket game. Following the loss to Denison, the Gorloks fell into the elimination round and picked up a 4-3 win over Transylvania and then saw its season end with an 8-2 loss to Denison on May 29. Denison closed the season ranked 25th and 15th respectively in the Perfect Game and D3Baseball.com polls.

It is the sixth time in the last nine years that Webster has finished the season ranked in the Top 12 of the final NCBWA/D3Baseball.com poll. 

NCAA Division III National Champion Salisbury (34-4) sits atop both of the final polls as they jumped from No. 3 to No. 1 in the final Perfect Game poll, while earning 625 points and all 25 first place votes in the final D3Baseball.com poll. At No. 2, the final polls differ as WashU, who won the NCAA Decatur Regional and advanced to the D-III World Series, is ranked No. 2, while St. Thomas (37-10), who were the 2021 NCAA Division III National Runners-up, is No. 2 in the final D3Baseball.com poll. 

In the Perfect Game Division III poll, the Top 10 is rounded out by St. Thomas (37-10) at No. 3, Cortland State (33-9) at No. 4, Adrian (37-10) at No. 5, Webster at No. 6, Marietta (38-6) at No. 7, Wisconsin-Whitewater (40-7) at No. 8, Rowan (29-6) at No. 9 and North Central (Ill.) (38-9) at No. 10, while the final Top 10 in the D3Baseball.com poll has WashU at No. 3, Cortland at No. 4, Adrian at No. 5, Wheaton (Mass.) (21-7) at No. 6, Rowan at No. 7, Marietta at No. 8, Wisconsin-Whitewater at No. 9 and Johns Hopkins at No. 10. 

Along with finishing with a 37-8 overall record and advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the 14th time in school history, Webster also captured its third consecutive St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament title and earned its 14th consecutive SLIAC regular season championship as they went 25-3 in league play. In addition, fifth-year senior pitcher Matt Mulhearn (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) was named a First-Team All-American by both the ABCA/Rawlings and D3Baseball.com and also took home the Division III National Pitcher of the Year from both D3Baseball.com and Perfect Game Baseball and was named the ABCA/Rawlings Central Region Pitcher of the Year and the SLIAC Pitcher of the Year.
