Gorloks Down Beavers in SLIAC Opener

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This evening the Webster University women's basketball team was back in action when they played host to the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers in their first SLIAC game of the season. The Gorloks were able to defeat the Beavers by a final score of 105-46 to improve to 10-0 on the season and 1-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the loss, the Beavers fall to 2-10 on the year and 0-2 in conference play.

The Gorloks went 43-for-79 (54.4%) from the floor and 6-for-14 (42.9%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Beavers 49-34 and forced them to turn the ball over 37 times in the contest. They turned those 37 turnovers into 42 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 22 assists on the night.

The Gorloks came out in the first half of the game and jumped out to an early 11-5 lead. They continued to push the tempo as the quarter progressed and were able to grow their lead to 27-13 heading into the second. The Beavers had a tough time taking care of the ball in the second and Webster was able to push their lead to 23 with five minutes to play in the half. The played well down the final stretch and took a 50-24 lead into the locker room. Addison Beussink led all scorers with 24 points in the frame.

Webster carried over their momentum into the second half and were able to extend their lead to 31 midway through the quarter. They were able to grow that lead to as many as 45 and took an 85-40 lead into the final frame. The Beavers did their best to get back into the game in the fourth but the damage was done as the Gorloks cruised to their 10th win of the season to improve to 10-0 for the first time in program history.

Addison Beussink led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a season high 29 points to go along with eight rebounds. In addition, Bethany Lancaster finished with 11 points, Naomi Johnson finished with 10 points, and Emily Kuntze finished with 10 points to round out the top scorers for Webster. Naomi Johnson, Hannah Cottrell, Julie Baudendistel, Lauryn Freeman, and Emily Kuntze all finished with three assists.

The Gorloks are back in action on Saturday, January 15th when they host Westminster (Mo.) College for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 1 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
