ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Webster University women's basketball team was back in action when they played host to the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were able to defeat the Blue Jays by a final score of 76-64 to improve to 11-0 on the season and 2-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the loss, the Blue Jays fall to 6-8 overall and 2-1 in the SLIAC.
The Gorloks went 31-for-67 (46.3%) from the floor and 6-for-17 (35.3%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded by the Blue Jays 46-41 and forced Westminster to turn the ball over 28 times in the game. They turned those 28 turnovers into 28 points on the offensive end of the floor. Webster also dished out 22 assists in the contest.
Westminster came out in the first half of the game and took it to the Gorloks early as they jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first few minutes of the contest. The Gorloks settled in as the game progressed but Westminster would take a 25-19 lead into the second. Webster bounced back to start the second and went on a 7-2 run in the first five minutes of the period to tie the score at 27. The Blue Jays quickly extended their lead back out to five, but a 9-0 run from the Gorloks to end the half put them up 36-32 at the break.
Webster carried over their momentum into the third quarter and were able to extend their lead to 11 in the first few minutes of the half. The played well as the quarter progressed and held a 61-52 lead heading into the final frame. The Blue Jays quickly cut the Gorloks lead to seven to start the third, but another run from Webster pushed their lead to 12 with just under seven minutes to play in the game. They pushed their lead to as many as 15 late in the contest and held off the Blue Jays down the stretch to solidify their 11
th straight win.
Addison Beussink led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a game high 17 points and a game high 11 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. In addition to Beussink,
Hannah Cottrell,
Naomi Johnson, and
Lauryn Freeman all finished with 11 points while
Julie Baudendistel pulled down 10 rebounds to round out the top performers for Webster.
The Gorloks are back in action on Tuesday, January 18
th when they travel to Eureka, Illinois, to take on the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m.
