ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Webster University men's basketball team was back in action when they played host to the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Blue Jays by a final score of 59-44 to improve to 4-10 on the season and 2-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the loss, Westminster falls to 4-9 on the year and 0-2 in the SLIAC.
Webster went 22-for-56 (39.3%) from the floor and 4-for-15 (26.7%) from behind the arc. They out rebounded the Blue Jays 47-28 and forced them to turn the ball over 13 times. Webster turned the ball over 16 times themselves while dishing out eight assists on the night.
The Gorloks came out in the first half and took it to the Blue Jays early as they jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game. They continued to push the tempo as the game progressed and made it difficult on the Blue Jays offensively as they held a 24-7 lead with 6:31 to play in the half. Webster pushed their lead out to as many as 20 in the frame and took a 33-15 lead into the locker room.
The Blue Jays came out in the second half and quickly cut the Gorloks lead to 12. They forced the Gorloks to turn the ball over several times over the next few minutes and found themselves trailing just 47-41 with four minutes to play in the game. However, Webster quickly pushed their lead back out to 13 over the next few minutes and held off the Blue Jays down the stretch to solidify their third win in four games.
Rodson Etienne led the way for Webster as he finished with a game high 21 points.
Wynne Brown Jr. also had a nice game offensively as he finished with 18 points on the night.
Karl Moore Jr. and
Javane Nugent led the way on the boards for the Gorloks as Moore Jr. finished with 14 rebounds and Nugent finished with 11.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Tuesday, January 18
th when they travel to Eureka (Ill.) College to take on the Red Devils for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to tip off at 7:30 p.m.
