LOUISVILLE, Ky. – This evening the Webster University men's basketball team was back in action when they traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Golden Eagles by a final score of 64-60 to improve to 5-12 on the season and 3-3 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the loss, Spalding falls to 4-15 on the season and 3-4 in the SLIAC.
The Gorloks went 24-for-51 (47.1%) from the floor and 3-for-12 (25.0%) from the three-point line. They outrebouned the Golden Eagles 37-25 and forced them to turn the ball over 13 times in the game. The Gorloks turned those 13 turnovers into 20 points on the other end of the floor while dishing out 11 assists in the contest.
Webster came out in the first half and took it to the Golden Eagles early as they jumped out to an 18-2 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. They continued to play well as the half progressed and held a 26-9 advantage with five minutes to play in the frame. The Golden Eagles battled back and were able to cut the lead back down to 11, but a late three-pointer from
Mark Moore to end the period put Webster up 35-21 at the break.
Spalding came out in the second half and quickly cut the Gorloks lead down to five. Webster pushed their lead back out to 12 over the next few minutes and held a 58-49 lead with three minutes to play in the game. Despite being down, the Golden Eagles stayed in it and found themselves trailing by just two in the final minute of the contest. However,
Wynne Brown Jr. hit his final two free throws of the game to solidify the road win for Webster.
Karl Moore Jr. led the way for Webster as he finished with a team high 15 points while bringing down nine rebounds and blocking two shots. In addition to Moore Jr.,
Rodson Etienne finished with 13 points,
Wynne Brown Jr. finished with 11 points, and
Javane Nugent added 11 rebounds to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, January 29
th when they play host to the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for a SLIAC matchup. This game will serve as the teams annual Coaches vs. Cancer game and our Student Athlete Advisory Committee will be collecting donations at the door as well putting on a 50/50 raffle. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
