ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Webster University men's basketball team was back in action when they played host to the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Griffins by a final score of 77-55 to fall to 5-13 on the season and 3-4 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the win, the Griffins improve to 10-5 on the year and 6-1 in the SLIAC.
The Gorloks had a tough time scoring the ball today as they went 21-for-62 (33.9%) from the floor and 3-for-21 (14.3%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded 51-32 and turned the ball over 14 times in the game. They forced the Griffins to turn the ball over 17 times and dished out 11 assists.
Webster came out in the first half of the game and found themselves trailing 9-4 in the first three minutes. They scored the next six points of the game and held a 10-9 advantage with 15 minutes to play in the period. The game remained close over the next few minutes but a 21-7 run from the Griffins put them up 36-22 late in the half. Webster cut the lead back down to single digits and the Griffins would take a 42-33 lead into the locker room.
Fontbonne came out of the locker room and quickly pushed their lead back out to 14 in the first few minutes of the half. Webster bounced back and cut the lead back down to nine, but a 10-0 run from the Griffins put them up 61-42 midway through the frame. Fontbonne continued to push the tempo as the half progressed and grew their lead to 26 with just under six minutes remaining. The Gorloks did their best to get back into the contest but the damage was done as the Griffins held them off down the stretch to solidify the win.
Karl Moore Jr. led the way for Webster as he finished with a team high 13 points while pulling down six rebounds. In addition,
Javane Nugent finished with nine points,
Stephen Hawkins finished with nine points, and
Markus Becton pulled down six rebounds to round out the top performers for Webster.
The Gorloks are back in action on Wednesday, February 2
nd when they host the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
