Late Comeback Falls Short Against Greenville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This evening the Webster University men's basketball team was back on the court when they played host to the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Panthers by a final score of 109-95 to fall to 5-14 on the season and 3-5 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the win the Panthers improve to 2-18 on the season and 1-8 in SLIAC play.

The Gorloks went 37-for-74 (50.0%) from the floor and 2-for-7 (28.6%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Panthers 52-45 and forced them to turn the ball over 19 times in the game. The Gorloks turned the ball over 25 times in the contest while dishing out 13 assists on the night.

The Gorloks came out in the first half of the game and found themselves trailing 13-8 in the first four minutes of the contest. Webster battled back over the next few minutes and were able to take a 16-15 lead with just under 14 minutes to play. The game remained close as the half progressed but with the score tied at 29 the Panthers went on a 9-2 run to take a 38-31 advantage with six minutes to play in the period. The Gorloks cut the lead to one late in the half, but a 10-1 run from the Panthers to close out frame put them up 54-44 at the break.

The Panther came out in the second half and grew their lead to 19 with just over 12 minutes to play in the game. The Gorloks cut the lead back down to 13, but another run from the Panthers put them up 94-71 with seven minutes to play. The Gorloks picked up the pace over the next few minutes and answered with a 16-0 run to cut the Greenville lead down to seven. They were able to get the lead down to as many as five with 2:30 left to play but the Panthers answered with a 12-2 run to end the game to solidify the win.

Rodson Etienne led the way for the Gorloks as he finished with a season high 30 points to go along with eight rebounds. Jason Coleman also had a nice game as he finished with 16 points in the contest. In addition, Wynne Brown Jr. finished with 13 points, Markus Becton added 11 points, and Javane Nugent pulled down a game high 13 rebounds to round out the top performers for Webster.

The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, February 5th when they travel to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Bluejays for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
