Gorloks Improve to 15-0 on Senior Day

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This afternoon the Webster University women's basketball team was back in action when they played host to the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks, who celebrated their five seniors prior to the start of the contest, were able to improve to 15-0 on the season and 6-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after defeating the Griffins by a final score of 108-72. With the loss, the Griffins fall to 8-9 on the season and 4-3 in the SLIAC.

The Gorloks went 41-for-76 (53.9%) from the field and 10-for-24 (41.7%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Griffins 43-25 and forced them to turn the ball over 21 times in the contest. They turned those 21 turnovers into 24 points on the offensive end of the floor. Webster also dished out 25 assists in the contest.

The Gorloks came out in the first quarter and were firing on all cylinders to start the game. They jumped out to an early 13-2 lead in the first few minutes of the quarter and held a 30-20 advantage at the end of the frame. They continued to play aggressive defense to start the second and were able to grow their lead to 17 with just over eight minutes to play in the half. They were able to grow their lead to as many as 24 in the quarter and took a 56-37 lead into the halftime break.

The Gorloks carried over their momentum from the first half into the second as they grew their lead to 27 in the first four minutes of the period. The Griffins cut the lead back down to 22 over the next few minutes, but another run from Webster put them up 81-55 heading into the fourth. They pushed that lead out to 39 in the final frame and cruised to their 15th straight win to stay undefeated on the season.

Naomi Johnson led the way for Webster as she finished with a game high 25 points after matching a Webster single game record of seven threes in the contest. In addition to Johnson, Hannah Cottrell finished with 17 points, Addison Beussink added 16 points, Emily Wilson pulled down a team high eight rebounds, and Lauryn Freeman dished out a game high five assists.

The Gorloks are back in action on Wednesday, February 2nd when they play host to the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
