GREENVILLE, Ill. – This afternoon the Webster University men's basketball team was back in action when they traveled across the river to Greenville, Illinois, to take on the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers in their first SLIAC game of the season. The Gorloks defeated the Panthers by a final score of 96-85 to improve to 3-9 on the season and 1-0 in the SLIAC. With the loss, the Panthers fall to 1-12 on the year and 0-2 in conference play.
Webster shot the ball well in this one as they went 38-for-75 (50.7%) from the floor and 11-for-32 (34.3%) from the three-point line. They outrebounded the Panthers 53-34 and forced them to turn the ball over 11 times. The Gorloks also dished out 20 assists in the contest.
Webster came out in the first half of the game and jumped out to an early 6-2 lead. The Panthers battled back and took their first lead of the game with just under 15 minutes to play in the half. The game went back-and-forth over the next few minutes of the period but with the score tied at 22 the Gorloks went on a 9-3 run to take a 31-25 lead late in the half. Webster pushed their lead out to as many as 13 late in the frame and took a 50-37 lead into the locker room.
The Panthers came out in the second half and clawed their way back into the contest as they were able to tie the score at 61 with 12:38 left to play. The game remained close over the next few minutes but the Panthers held an 83-81 lead with three minutes remaining. However, Webster picked it up down the final stretch and went on a 15-2 run in the last three minutes to solidify their second straight win.
Mark Moore led the way for the Gorloks as he finished with a career high 25 points after knocking down seven three-point shots in the contest. In addition to Moore,
Javane Nugent and
Karl Moore Jr. both finished with double-doubles as Nugent had 15 points and 13 rebounds while Moore Jr. added 12 points and a game high 16 rebounds.
Wynne Brown Jr. rounds out the top performers for Webster as he finished with 17 points in the game.
The Gorloks are back in action on Wednesday, January 12
th when they play host to the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
