ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this evening when they traveled to Bloomington, Illinois, to take on the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point Pointers in their first game of the 2022 Sikma Hall of Fame Invitational hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University. The Gorloks were defeated by the Pointers by a final score of 80-47 to fall to 0-2 on the season.
The Gorloks went 20-for-48 (41.7%) from the floor and 1-for-12 (8.3%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded by the Pointers by a final count of 40-27 and pulled down nine offensive boards compared to 18 from UW-Stevens Point. The Gorloks forced the Pointers to turn the ball over 10 times in the game while turning those turnovers into 10 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 10 assists in the contest.
The Gorloks came out in the first half and played well to start the game as they jumped out to an early 9-2 lead. The Pointers answered back and tied the score at 20, and then went on a 16-5 run over the final few minutes of the period to take a 36-25 lead at the break.
The Pointers carried over their momentum into the second half an extended their lead to 18 in the first four minutes of the frame. Webster was able to cut the lead back down to 10 midway through the period, but a 12-1 run from the Pointers over the next few minutes gave them a 64-43 lead with six minutes to play. The Gorloks tried their best to get back into the game but had a tough time finding the bottom of the basket as the Pointers closed them out down the stretch to solidify the win.
Karl Moore Jr. led the way for Webster as he finished with a team high 14 points and a team high 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double. In addition,
Wynne Brown Jr. finished with eight points while
Javane Nugent and
Jason Coleman both added six.
The men's basketball team is back in action on Sunday, November 13
th when they continue play in the 2022 Sikma Hall of Fame Invitational at Illinois Wesleyan University. The Gorloks will play in the consolation game against either Illinois Wesleyan University of Yeshiva (N.Y.) University at 1 p.m. in Bloomington, Illinois.
