Gorloks Battle With 16th Ranked Bears

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the 16th ranked Washington (Mo.) University Bears for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks fell to the Bears by a final score of 53-52 to fall to 0-4 on the season. With the win, Washington University improves to 2-1 on the season.

The Gorloks went 21-for-58 (36.2%) from the floor and 4-for-17 (23.5%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded by the Bears by a final count of 43-33 and pulled down 17 offensive boards compared to 12 from WashU. The Gorloks forced the Bears to turn the ball over 10 times in the game while turning those turnovers into eight points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out eight assists in the contest.

Webster came out in the first half and found themselves trailing 10-5 early in the game. They quickly tied the score at 10 and then went on a 10-6 run to take a 20-16 lead with six minutes to play in the half. The Gorloks continued to play well down the final stretch of the half as they ended the period on a 12-7 run to take a 32-23 lead into the locker room.

Webster carried over their momentum into the second half and quickly extended their lead to 11 in the first two minutes of the period. The Bears answered with a 13-4 run to cut the lead to two, but another quick run from Webster put them up 47-38 midway through the frame. WashU came storming back over the next few minutes and went on a 13-0 run to take a 50-47 lead with five minutes to play. Webster kept it close down the stretch but trailed by one in the final seconds of the game. They were unable to score at the buzzer as the Bears got the final stop to solidify the win.

Jason Coleman led the way for Webster as he finished with a game high 15 points. Jemard Sykes II also had a nice game as he recorded a season high 12 points. In addition, Alpha Diallo finished with seven points and nine rebounds while Karl Moore Jr. added six points and 10 rebounds.

The men's basketball team is back in action on Friday, November 18th when they play host to the Central (Iowa) College Dutch for their first game of the 2022 Webster Classic. The game will start at 8 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
