ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action tonight when they played host to the Central (Iowa) College Dutch for their first game of the 2022 Webster Classic. The Gorloks were defeated by the Dutch by a final score of 66-45 to fall to 0-5 on the season. With the win, the Dutch improve to 2-2 on the year.
The Gorloks went 19-for-67 (28.4%) from the floor and 4-for-17 (23.5%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Dutch by a final count of 46-33 and pulled down 14 offensive boards compared to 10 from Central. The Gorloks forced the Dutch to turn the ball over 18 times in the game while turning those turnovers into 16 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out nine assists in the contest.
Webster came out in the first half of the game and jumped out to an early 7-4 lead. The Dutch battled back and tied the score at nine, and then went on a 11-6 run to take a 20-15 lead with seven minutes to play in the half. The Gorloks cut the lead to one, but a 9-4 run from Central to end the half put them up 33-27 at the break.
The Dutch carried over their momentum into the second half and quickly extended their lead to 11 in the first four minute of the period. Webster cut the lead back down to single digits, but another run from the Dutch put them up 18 with four minutes to play in the contest. The Gorloks tried their best to get back into the game down the stretch, but had a tough time finding the bottom of the basket as Central closed them out to solidify the win.
Jemard Sykes II led the way for Webster as he finished with a team high 10 points and a team high eight rebounds. In addition,
Jason Coleman finished with eight points,
Karl Moore Jr. finished with seven points,
Josh Luster finished with seven points, and
Markus Becton added six points.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, November 19
th when they host the DePauw (Ind.) University Tigers for their final game of the 2022 Webster Classic. The game is set to start at 3 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
