ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action yesterday afternoon when they played host to the DePauw (Ind.) University Tigers for their final game of the 2022 Webster Classic. The Gorloks were defeated by the Tigers by a final score of 79-61 to fall to 0-6 on the season. With the win, the Tigers improve to 4-1 on the year.
The Gorloks went 23-for-55 (41.8%%) from the floor and 3-for-15 (20.0%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Tigers by a final count of 39-34 and pulled down 12 offensive boards. The Gorloks forced the Dutch to turn the ball over six times in the game while turning those turnovers into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 10 assists in the contest.
Webster came out in the first half and found themselves trailing 15-8 in the first seven minutes of the game. The Gorloks battled back and tied the score at 15, but a 19-8 run from the Tigers put them up 34-23 late in the half. The Tigers continued to push the tempo down the final stretch of the half and took a 41-25 lead into the locker room.
In the second half of the game, Webster came out of the locker room and cut the lead down to 11 in the first four minutes of the period. The Tigers answered back and went on a 13-5 run over the next few minutes to extend their lead to 19 with 12 minutes to play. The Gorloks cut the lead down to as many as 13, but that was as close as they would get as the Tigers closed them out down the stretch to solidify the win.
The Gorloks had four players finish in double figures as
Jason Coleman and
Markus Becton both finished with 11 points while
Jemard Sykes II and
Karl Moore Jr. each finished with 10. Sykes also led the team on the boards as he recorded a team high seven rebounds. Lastly,
Javane Nugent added nine points for Webster.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, the Webster Classic All-Tournament Team and Most Valuable Player was announced. For their efforts, Jaxon Althaus (Westminster), Grant Gohmann (DePauw), Joshua Van Gorp (Central), and
Jemard Sykes II (Webster) were all named to the all-tournament team while Elijah Hales (Depauw) was named tournament MVP.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Tuesday, November 22
nd when they travel to Monmouth, Illinois, to take on Monmouth (Ill.) College for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
