Gorloks Drop First Game of the Season

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Rock Island, Illinois, to take on the Augustana (Ill.) College Vikings for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks fell to the Vikings by a final score of 87-64 to fall to 3-1 on the season. With the win, Augustana improves to 5-1 on the year.

The Gorloks went 24-for-60 (40.0%) from the floor and 4-for-16 (25.0%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded by a final count of 46-30 and brought down 10 offensive boards compared to 17 from the Vikings. Webster forced Augustana to turn the ball over 16 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 14 points on the other end of the floor. The Gorloks also dished out 11 assists in the contest.

Webster came out in the first quarter and found themselves trailing 8-2 early in the contest. They battled back and cut the lead to two late in the frame, but a 12-9 run from the Vikings to end the quarter put them up 26-21 heading into the second. Augustana pushed their lead to as many as 19 in the second quarter and took a 55-36 lead into the locker room.

The Gorloks came out of the locker room and cut the Vikings lead to 15 late in the third quarter. However, Augustana scored the final two points of the period to put themselves up 71-54 heading into the fourth.

Webster picked it up the start the fourth and went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 11. The Vikings answered with another run of their own and never let the Gorloks back in the game as they closed them out down the stretch to solidify the win.

Julie Baudendistel led the way for Webster as she finished with a team high 14 points in the contest. Bethany Lancaster and Kate Rolfes also finished in double figures as Lancaster recorded 12 points and Rolfes added 13. Jena Stannard led the team with five rebounds.

The Gorloks return to the court on Friday, December 2nd when they host the Rhodes (Tenn.) College Lynx for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
