Gorloks Fall to Blueboys in Season Opener

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team started their 2022-23 season this evening when they played host to the Illinois College Blueboys for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Blueboys by a final score of 61-45 to fall to 0-1 on the season.

The Gorloks went 18-for-47 from the floor and 3-for-16 from behind the arc. They were outrebounded by the Blueboys by a final count of 40-35 and pulled down seven offensive boards compared to 15 from Illinois College. The Gorloks forced the Blueboys to turn the ball over seven times in the game while turning those turnovers into six points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out nine assists in the contest.

Webster got off to a slow start in this one as the Blueboys jumped out to an early 9-3 lead. The Gorloks picked it up as the half progressed and went on a 15-6 run over the next few minutes to take an 18-15 advantage in the game. They pushed their lead to as many as four, but a 12-2 run from Illinois College to end the half put them up 28-22 at the break.

Illinois College carried over their momentum into the second half and extended their lead out to 13. They pushed their lead to as many as 20 in the half and never let Webster back in the game.

Karl Moore Jr. led the way for Webster as he finished with a team high 11 points, a team high 12 rebounds, and a game high nine blocks. His nine blocked shots are tied for the second most in a single game in program history. In addition, Jason Coleman finished with 10 points while Wynne Brown Jr. added nine.

The men's basketball team is back in action on Saturday, November 12th when they travel to Bloomington, Illinois, to compete in the Sikma Hall of Fame Invitational at Illinois Wesleyan University. The Gorloks will take on the UW-Stevens Point (Wis.) Pointers at 6 p.m.
