ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Mississippi University for Women Owls for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Owls by a final score of 88-30 to improve to 7-1 on the season. With the loss, the Owls fall to 0-7 on the year.
Webster went 40-for-81 (49.4%) from the floor and 3-for-16 (18.8%) from behind the arc. The Gorloks outrebounded the Owls by a final count of 57-32 and pulled down 23 boards on the offensive end. The Gorloks forced the Owls to turn the ball over 24 times while turning those turnovers into 33 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 20 assists in the contest.
Webster came out in the first quarter and jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead. The Owls cut the lead to five, but the Gorloks ended the quarter on a 19-0 run to take a 28-4 lead into the second. The Owls opened up the second with a 5-0 run, but another run from Webster would push their lead to 54-13 at the break.
The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the third quarter and pushed their lead to 50 midway through the frame. They continued to push the tempo and took a 75-20 lead into the fourth. The Owls had a tough time getting anything going in the final quarter and the Gorloks cruised to their fourth straight win.
Bethany Lancaster led the way for Webster as she finished with a team high 15 points and game high 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. In addition,
Trinniti Matthews finished with 11 points and six rebounds while
Emily Wilson added 10 points and six rebounds.
The women's basketball team will be back in action on Friday, December 16
th when they host the Monmouth (Ill.) College Fighting Scots for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 5 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
