JACKSON, Tenn. – The Webster University men's basketball team took the floor this afternoon when they traveled to Jackson, Mississippi, to take on the Millsaps (Miss.) College Majors for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks picked up their first win of the season as they defeated the Majors by a final score of 67-56 to improve to 1-8 on the season. With the loss, the Majors fall to 1-6 on the year.
The Gorloks went 24-for-56 (42.9%) from the floor and 7-for-12 (58.3%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Majors by a final count of 39-34 and pulled down 12 offensive boards. The Gorloks forced the Majors to turn the ball over 14 times while turning those turnovers into 12 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out nine assists in the contest.
Webster came out in the first half of the game and jumped out to an early 14-9 lead in the first six minutes. They continued to push the tempo as the half progressed and went on a 14-3 run over the next few minutes to push their lead to 28-12 midway through the period. The Majors answered back and were able to cut the Gorloks lead to nine late in the half, but a
Josh Luster layup at the end of the period gave Webster a 35-24 advantage at the break.
The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the second and went on a 7-0 run to start the half to take a 42-24 lead in the game. The Majors battled back as the half progressed and were able to cut the Webster lead to 48-39 with 10 minutes to play in the contest. The Gorloks answered with a 14-7 run to push their lead back to 16 late in the game, and held off the Majors down the stretch to solidify their first win of the season.
Wynne Brown Jr. led the way for Webster as he finished with a game high 18 points to go along with six rebounds and a team high three assists.
Josh Luster also played well as he finished with 14 points in the contest. In addition,
Jemard Sykes II added nine points while
Markus Becton and
Nate Jones each pulled down a team high seven rebounds.
The Gorloks will return home on Thursday, December 8
th when they host the Williams Baptist (Ark.) University Eagles for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
