ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball was back in action this evening when they played host to the Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) University Hornets for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Hornets by a final score of 70-54 to improve to 6-1 on the season. With the loss, the Hornets fall to 2-8 on the year.
Webster went 29-for-74 (39.2%) from the floor and 3-for-18 (16.7%) from behind the arc. The Gorloks and Hornets both pulled down 43 rebounds in the contest with the Gorloks picking up 14 offensive boards compared to 10 from Harris-Stowe. The Gorloks forced the Hornets to turn the ball over 26 times while turning those turnovers into 24 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 17 assists in the contest.
Webster came out in the first quarter and jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first five minutes of the game. They continued to push the tempo as the quarter progressed and ended the period on a 14-7 run to take a 24-12 lead into the second. Webster carried over their momentum into the second and pushed their lead to 33-18 midway through the period. They ended the half on a 13-8 run and took a 46-26 lead into the locker room.
In the third quarter, the Gorloks came out of the locker room and pushed their lead to 25 with just over six minutes to play in the period. The Hornets cut the lead down to 19, but a 9-0 run from the Gorloks to end the quarter put them up 28 heading into the fourth. Harris-Stowe tried to get back into the game in the final frame but Webster was able to close them out down the stretch to solidify the win.
Julie Baudendistel led the way for Webster as she finished with a game high 17 points to go along with a team high nine rebounds.
Kate Rolfes also had a nice game as she finished with 13 points and four rebounds. In addition,
Nysa Gilchrist and
Trinniti Matthews both finished with 10 points while Matthews also pulled down seven rebounds.
The women's basketball team will have a quick turnaround as their next game will be tomorrow, December 10
th when they host the Mississippi University for Women Owls for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 1 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
