ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action tonight when they played host to the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Golden Eagles by a final score of 84-65 to improve to 7-17 on the season and 5-8 in SLIAC play. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 8-15 on the year and 6-6 in the conference.
Tonight's game served as Senior Night for the men's basketball team. Prior to tip-off, the program honored
Cody Parks and
Stephen Hawkins for their hard work and dedication to the program while sporting a Gorlok uniform.
The Gorloks shot the ball well in this one as they went 34-for-68 (50.0%) from the floor and 7-for-19 (36.8%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Golden Eagles 38-36 and forced them to turn the ball over 10 times in the contest. Webster only turned the ball over five times in the game while dishing out 19 assists.
Webster came out in the first half and played well to start the game as they jumped out to an early 11-7 lead. The Golden Eagles bounced back and answered with an 11-2 run to take a 18-13 lead midway through the half. The Gorloks quickly tied the score at 18 and both sides exchanged baskets over the next few minutes. With the score tied at 25, the Gorloks ended the half on a 9-6 run to take a 34-31 lead into the locker room.
Webster carried over their momentum into the second half and grew their lead to 12 in the first four minutes of the period. The Golden Eagles cut the lead back down to single digits, but another run from the Gorloks put them up 68-44 with eight minutes to play in the game. They pushed their lead out to as many as 26 and held off Spalding down the stretch to cruise to their second straight win.
Wynne Brown Jr. led the way for Webster has he finished with a game high 22 points. In addition to Brown Jr.,
Karl Moore Jr. finished with 13 points,
Bryce Woolridge added 10 points, and
Markus Becton finished with a game high six assists to lead the Gorloks offensively.
Rodson Etienne led Webster with a game high eight rebounds.
The Gorloks are back on the court on Saturday, February 19
th when they travel to Carlinville, Illinois, to take on the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for their final game of the regular season. The game is set to tip-off at 3 p.m.
