Gorloks Clinch Third Straight SLIAC Title

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This evening the Webster University women's basketball team was back on the court when they played host to the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for their final home game of the regular season. Webster, who is receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, were able to improve to 22-0 on the season and 13-0 in the SLIAC with a 84-44 win. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 8-15 on the year and 4-8 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

With the win tonight, the Gorloks are the 2021-22 SLIAC Regular Season Champions. This marks their third straight SLIAC Regular Season title and their fourth in program history. They have locked up the top seed in the SLIAC Women's Basketball Tournament and will host the eighth seed on Wednesday, February 23rd at 7 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.

Webster went 34-for-74 (45.9%) from the floor and 2-for-15 (13.3%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Golden Eagles 48-34 and finished the game with 15 offensive boards. They forced the Golden Eagles to turn the ball over 36 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 34 points on the offensive end of the floor. They also dished out 18 assists in the contest.

Webster came out in the first quarter of the game and jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead. The continued to push the tempo as the quarter progressed and took a 20-9 lead into the second. The Golden Eagles bounced back to start the second and cut the lead to eight, but a 5-0 run from Webster over the next few minutes put them up 27-14 midway through the frame. Webster pushed their lead to as many as 19 in the period, but a 9-2 run from the Golden Eagles to end the half cut the Gorloks lead to 37-25 at the break.

The Gorloks came out of the locker room and quickly extended their lead to 20 in the first three minutes of the quarter. The Golden Eagles cut the lead down to 17, but another run from Webster put them up 74-37 heading into the final frame. The Golden Eagles tried to get back into the contest in the final quarter but the Gorloks cruised to their 22 straight win.

Addison Beussink led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a game high 19 points and seven rebounds. In addition to Beussink, Bethany Lancaster finished with 15 points, Lauryn Freeman finished with eight points and seven rebounds, and Hannah Cottrell added eight points to round out the top performers for Webster.

The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, February 19th when they travel to Carlinville, Illinois, to take on the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for their final game of the regular season. The game is set to tip-off at 1 p.m.
