FULTON, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks stayed unbeaten on the season as they defeated Westminster by a final score of 89-81 to improve to 17-0 on the year and 8-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the loss, the Blue Jays fall to 12-9 on the season and 9-1 in SLIAC play.
The Gorloks shot the ball well in this one as they went 35-for-67 (52.2%) from the floor and 5-for-14 (35.7%) from behind the arc. They finished the game with 31 rebounds including nine offensive boards. They forced the Blue Jays to turn the ball over 25 times in the contest while turning those 25 turnovers into 25 points on the offensive end. Webster also dished out 23 assists in the game.
The Gorloks came out in the first quarter of the game and jumped out to a 16-10 lead in the first five minutes of the contest. The Blue Jays battled back and cut the lead to two, but another run from Webster put them up 29-23 heading into the second. Westminster picked it up to start the second quarter and were able to tie the score at 33 with just under six minutes to pay in the half. The Blue Jays led by as many as seven in the final minutes, but a 5-0 run from Webster to end the half put them down 49-47 at the break.
Webster regained their lead two minutes into the third quarter and held a seven-point advantage midway through the frame. They continued to play well as the period progressed and took a 65-61 lead into the fourth. Webster was able to push their lead to as many as 13 in the final frame and held the Blue Jays off down the final stretch to solidify the win and stay unbeaten on the season.
Addison Beussink led the way for Webster as she finished with a team high 23 points.
Hannah Cottrell also played well as she finished with 16 points and a season high seven assists. In addition,
Julie Baudendistel finished with 13 points and a team high six rebounds while
Bethany Lancaster added 10 points to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.
Webster is back in action on Monday, February 7
th when they travel across town to take on the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m.
