Gorloks Battle Back in Second Half to Stay Undefeated

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – This evening the Webster University women's basketball team was back in action when they traveled down Big Bend to take on the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks, who were coming off a big road win against Westminster, were able to keep their perfect season alive as they defeated the Griffins by a final score of 85-66 to improve to 18-0 on the season and 9-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the loss, the Griffins fall to 8-11 on the year and 4-5 in the SLIAC.

Webster went 35-for-75 (46.7%) from the floor and 4-for-19 (21.1%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Griffins 39-26 and finished with 21 offensive boards. They forced the Griffins to turn the ball over 29 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 33 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 24 assists in the contest.

In the first quarter of the game, both sides came out and exchanged points early. With the score tied at eight, the Gorloks scored the next four points of the game to take their biggest lead of the first half. The Griffins battled back and ended the quarter on a 10-5 run to take a 18-17 lead into the second. Webster retook the lead to start the second, but a 10-2 run over the next few minutes put Fontbonne up 28-21 in the game. Webster tied the score late in the half, but a 10-7 run from the Griffins to end the frame put them up 42-39 at the break.

Webster came out in the second half and were able to tie the score at 47. They pushed the tempo as the third quarter progressed and went on a 14-7 run to end the period to take a 61-54 lead into the fourth. The Gorloks continued to play well to start the final frame and grew their lead to 11 with 8:30 left to play. The Griffins cut the lead back down to single digits, but the Gorloks ended the game on a 14-4 run to solidify their 18th straight win.

Julie Baudendistel led the way for Webster as she finished with a team high 20 points while bringing down six rebounds. Hannah Cottrell also had a great game as she finished with 16 points while adding a season high nine assists and a season high six rebounds. In addition, Addison Beussink finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, Naomi Johnson finished with 10 points, and Emily Wilson added 10 points to round out the top performers for Webster.

The Gorloks will return to the court on Wednesday, February 9th when they host the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
