DAVENPORT, Fla. – This afternoon the #10 Webster baseball team was back in action when they took on #11 Wheaton (Mass.) College in Devenport, Florida. The Gorloks defeated the Lyon by a final score of 11-9 to improve to 9-3 on the season. With the loss, the Lyons fall to 2-4 on the season.
The Gorloks bats were rolling in this one as they put together 14 hits in the contest. After finding themselves down 3-0 after the first inning, the Gorloks were able to get on the board in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from
Ben Swords. The Lyons added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, but a five-run rally from the Gorloks in the top of the fifth gave Webster a 6-5 lead midway through the game. Wheaton rallied for three runs of their own in the bottom of the third, but the Gorloks answered with three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 9-8 lead in the contest. After exchanging runs in the eighth,
Parker Wielt was able to score on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth to give Webster a two-run lead and solidify the win.
Alek Elges (3-1) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed nine hits and five earned runs while striking out six in 6.0 innings.
Deven Shulstad came in to relieve Elges and allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out three in the final 3.0 innings of the game. Shulstad earned his first save of the season.
Parker Wielt led the way for Webster as he went 4-for-5 with four runs scored.
Ben Swords also had a nice game as he went 2-for-3 with three RBI. In addition,
Adam Lovell went 2-for-3 with an RBI,
A.J. Smith went 1-for-5 with two RBI,
Malik Wirges went 3-for-5 with two RBI, and
Bryson Rigsby went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
The baseball team will take on #11 Wheaton (Mass.) College tomorrow morning in Auburndale, Florida. First pitch is set for 9:45 a.m. EST at Lake Myrtle Complex Field 3.
