AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The 10
th ranked Webster baseball team was back in action this morning when they took on #11 Wheaton (Mass.) College in Auburndale, Florida. The Gorloks, who defeated the Lyons yesterday by a final score of 11-9, were able to complete the sweep as they won today by a final score of 13-9 to improve to 10-3 on the season. With the loss, the Lyons fall to 2-5 on the year.
Webster's bats were rolling today as they finished with a season high 18 hits in the contest. The Gorloks got on the board first as
A.J. Smith scored on an error by the second baseman in the bottom of the first inning to give Webster a 1-0 lead. The Lyons were held scoreless through the first three innings, but four runs in the top of the fourth and one run in the top of the fifth gave Wheaton a 5-1 lead midway through the contest. The Gorloks answered back in the bottom of the fifth and rallied for six runs to retake the lead. The Lyons tied the score in the top of the seventh, but six runs in the final two innings solidified the win for the Gorloks.
Carter Hunt got the start in this one as he allowed one hit and two earned runs while striking out four in 3.0 innings.
Cooper Hake,
Joel Arsenault, and
Quinn Weber followed Hunt as the three combined to allow two hits and three earned runs over the next 1.1 innings of the game.
Ben Kowalski (4-0) picked up the win as he allowed three hits and one earned run while striking out four in 3.2 innings of work.
Parker Wielt picked up the final three outs for the Gorloks on the mound.
Parker Wielt led the way at the plate as he went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Nathaniel Martinez and
Mitch Daniels also had great games as Martinez went 2-for-4 with three RBI and
Mitch Daniels went 3-for-5 with three RBI. In addition,
Aron Hopp,
Evan Evola,
Malik Wirges, and
Matt Staker each added an RBI for Webster.
The Gorloks are back in action on Saturday, March 26
th when they travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a SLIAC doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 1 p.m. EST with the second to follow.
