Gorloks Swept to Open Conference Play

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The #8 Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a doubleheader to open SLIAC play. The Gorloks were swept by the Golden Eagles as they lost the first game by a final score of 12-3 and then lost the second game by final score of 5-4 to fall to 10-5 on the season and 0-2 in SLIAC play. With the sweep, the Golden Eagles improve to 10-8 on the year and 2-0 in the SLIAC.

The Gorloks had a tough time getting anything going offensively in the first game as they were held to just four hits in the contest. The Golden Eagles got on the board first as they scored a run in the bottom of the first to jump out to an early lead. The Gorloks rallied for three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 advantage, but one run in the bottom of the fourth, five runs in the bottom of the sixth, two runs in the bottom of the seventh, and three runs in the bottom of the eighth solidified the win for Spalding.

Jordan Smevoll was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed eight hits and two earned runs while striking out four in 5.0 innings. Ben Kowalski (4-1) and Sebastian Berrera pitched in relief as the two combined to allow eight hits and seven earned runs while striking out one in the final 3.0 innings of the game.

Ben Swords and Parker Wielt led the way at the plate as they each recorded an RBI in the contest. Wielt, A.J. Smith, and Nathaniel Martinez each finished with a hit in the game.

The Gorloks picked it up offensively in the second game as they put together nine hits in the contest. The Golden Eagles carried over their momentum from the first game and scored five runs through the first three innings to jump out to an early lead. Parker Wielt got the Gorloks on the board in the top of the fourth when thy hit a two-run homerun to cut the lead to 5-2. They added a run in the top of the sixth and a run in the top of the seventh, but the Golden Eagles picked up the final outs of the game to solidify the sweep.

Alek Elges (3-2) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed six hits and five earned runs while striking out four in 3.0 innings. Deven Shulstad came in to relieve Elges as he allowed just one hit while striking out three in the final 5.0 innings of the game.

Parker Wielt led the way at the plate as he went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. In addition, Malik Wirges went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Evan Evola added an RBI to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.

The Gorloks are back in action tomorrow, March 28th when they play the final game of the three-game series against the Golden Eagles. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. EST in Louisville, Kentucky.
