Gorloks Complete Comeback in SLIAC Tournament

O'FALLON, Mo. – The Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to O'Fallon, Missouri, to compete in the 2022 SLIAC Baseball Tournament. The Gorloks defeated the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers by a final score of 11-6 to improve to 35-6 on the year. With the loss, the Panthers fall to 18-23 on the year.

The Gorloks put together nine hits in the contest. After three scoreless innings, the Panthers got on the board first as they rallied for four runs in the top of the fourth to jump out to a 4-0 lead. They added a run in the top of the fifth and held a 5-0 advantage through the first five innings of the game. Webster had a tough time getting anything going through the first six innings of the contest but their offensive came alive in the seventh as they rallied for seven runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 7-5 lead. The Gorloks added four runs in the bottom of the eighth and held an 11-5 lead late in the game. The Panthers scored a run in the top of the ninth but Webster picked up the final outs of the game to solidify the win.

Carter Hunt was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed three hits and three earned runs in 3.0 innings. Ben Kowalski and Sebastian Barerra pitched the next 1.2 innings as they combined to allow four hits and two earned runs. Bobby Strandt (2-0) picked up the win as he did not allow a hit while striking out three in 2.1 innings. Alek Elges and Cooper Hake closed out the game as the two combined to allow two hits and one earned run while striking out one in the final 2.0 innings of the game. Cooper Hake picked up his second save of the season.

Parker Wielt led the way for the Gorloks as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Adam Lovell also had a great game as he went 3-for-5 with an RBI. In addition, R.J. LaRocco, Ben Swords, Evan Evola, Mitch Daniels, Bo Slaymaker, Zach Goodman, and Matt Staker each added an RBI in the contest.

The Gorloks will play their second game of the tournament on Friday, May 13th when they take on the winner of the second game of the day between Fontbonne (Mo.) University and Spalding (Ky.) University. The game is set to start at 3:30 p.m. at Car Shield Field.
