Gorloks Win 34th Game on Senior Day

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The #8 Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for their final game of the regular season. The Gorloks, who clinched their 15th straight SLIAC Regular Season Title on Saturday, completed the three-game series sweep over Eureka with a 9-7 win to improve to 34-6 on the year and 18-2 in the SLIAC. With the loss, Eureka falls to 16-21 on the year and 7-13 in conference play.

Prior to the start of the game, the Gorloks honored the eight seniors on the team for their hard work and dedication to the baseball program. Ben Swords, A.J. Smith, Bo Slaymaker, Austin Jisa, Bobby Strandt, Cooper Hake, Aron Hopp, and Adam Lovell were all recognized.

Webster put together eight hits in the game. The got off to a slow start as Eureka scored two runs in the top of the first and one run in the top of the third to jump out to a 3-0 lead. The Gorloks had a tough time getting anything going through the first two innings, but a two-run homerun from Ben Swords (6) in the bottom of the third cut the Red Devils lead to 3-2. They continued to put the ball in play in the next inning as they rallied for six runs to take an 8-3 lead into the fifth. The Red Devils and Gorloks exchanged runs in the fifth to make the score 9-4, and then a fifth run from Eureka in the top of the sixth cut the Webster lead to 9-5 in the contest. The Red Devils scored two more runs in the top of the ninth but the Gorloks were able to pick up the final outs to solidify their 34th win of the year.

Cooper Hake (2-1) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed nine hits and two earned runs while striking out five in 5.0 innings. Bobby Strandt, Sebastian Barrera, and Parker Wielt pitched in relief as the three combined to allow three hits and two earned runs while striking out six in the final 4.0 innings of the game.

Ben Swords and Evan Evola led the way at the plate as they both finished with one hit and two RBI. In addition, A.J. Smith went 2-for-5 while Aron Hopp, Austin Jisa, and Bo Slaymaker each added an RBI.

This marks the end of the 2022 Webster University baseball regular season. The Gorloks finished the regular season with a 34-6 overall record and an 18-2 mark in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Webster has earned the top seed in the SLIAC Baseball Tournament and will play their first game of the tournament on Thursday, May 12th at 4 p.m. at Carshield Field in O'Fallon, Missouri.
