ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's tennis team kicked off their fall season this afternoon when they played host to Illinois College and Oakland City (Ind.) University. The Gorloks split the matches as they defeated Illinois College by a final score of 9-0 and lost to Oakland City by a final score of 7-2 to improve to 1-1 on the season.
The Gorloks opened the day with a 9-0 sweep over Illinois College as they took all three doubles matches and all six singles matches.
Matthew Birchmeier and
Alex Pinkston took #1 doubles over Ethan Sabotta and Derek Wilkinson by a final score of 8-1.
Britton Struewing and
Carson Fisher took #2 doubles over Jack Leardini and Kyler Kantor by a final score of 8-2.
Jack Forlenza and
Andrew McDonald finished off the doubles sweep as they won by a final score of 8-2 in #3 doubles over Allen Oakley and Javon Norris.
Webster carried over their momentum into the singles portion of the match.
Alex Pinkston got things going as he defeated Ethan Sabotta in #1 singles by final scores of 7-5 and 6-3.
Britton Struewing won #2 singles over Derek Wilkinson by final scores of 6-2 and 6-0.
Nicholas Granada won #3 singles over Jack Leardini by final scores of 6-1 and 6-1.
Matthew Birchmeier won #4 singles over Kyler Kantor by final scores of 6-4 and 6-1.
Carson Fisher and
Jack Forlenza finished off the singles sweep as Fisher defeated Allen Oakley by final scores of 6-1 and 6-0 while Forlenza defeated Javon Norris by final scores 6-0 and 6-0.
The Gorloks had a tough time in their second match of the day as they fell to the Mighty Oaks by a final score of 7-2. Webster was swept in the doubles portion of the match as
Alex Pinkston and
Matthew Birchmeier fell 8-3 in #1 doubles,
Carson Fisher and
Britton Struewing fell 8-4 in #2 doubles, and
Cody Neal and
Nicholas Granada fell 8-6 in #3 doubles.
Matthew Birchmeier and
Cody Neal picked up the only two points for Webster in the singles portion of the match. Birchmeier won #5 singles by final scores of 6-4, 0-6, and 10-4. Neal won #6 singles by final scores of 6-3 and 6-0.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, September 10
th when they travel to Franklin, Indiana, to take on Trine (Ind.) University and Franklin (Ind.) College. The matches will take place at the Hoover Tennis Complex on the campus of Franklin College. The first match is set to start at 2 p.m. with the second to follow at 5:30 p.m.
