DECATUR, Ill. – The Webster University women's soccer team returned to the field this evening when they traveled to Decatur, Illinois, to take on the Millikin (Ill.) University Big Blue for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Big Blue by a final score of 2-1 to fall to 2-2 on the season. With the win, Millikin improves to 2-0-2 on the year.
Webster outshot the Big Blue by a final count of 10-6 with four of those shots being on target. All six of Millikin's shot were on frame. Millikin led in the corner count as they finished with three corner kicks compared to two from Webster.
The Gorloks came out in the first half of the game and controlled the possession early. They were able to get on the board in the 27th minute of the contest when Webster earned a free kick from 35 yards out.
Mya Stegen blasted the free kick right through the hands of Millikin's goalie and into the back of the net for the first tally of her career. The Big Blue tied the score late in the half and the score remained 1-1 at the break.
The game remained tied for most of the second half, but with four minutes remaining the Big Blue scored on a free kick of their own to take a 2-1 lead in the contest. The Gorloks did their best to tie it late, but Millikin closed them out in the final minutes to solidify the win.
Heather Jones (0-1) was the starting keeper for the Gorloks as she made four saves in the contest.
The Gorloks will return to the pitch on Saturday, September 10
th when they travel to Lisle, Illinois, to take on the Benedictine (Ill.) University Eagles in a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 11 a.m.
