Brown Jr. Scores 1,000th Career Point in Win

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action tonight when they played host to the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Panthers by a final score of 115-90 to improve to 5-8 on the season and 3-0 in conference play. With the loss, the Panthers fall to 1-13 on the year and 0-3 in the SLIAC.

The Gorloks went 50-for-81 (61.7%) from the floor and 0-for-3 (0.0%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Panthers by a final count of 57-54 and pulled down 17 rebounds on the offensive end. They forced the Panthers to turn the ball over 21 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 23 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out a season high 28 assists.

The Gorloks came out in the first half of the game and jumped out to an 11-3 lead in the first three minutes. The Panthers cut the lead to three, but another run from Webster would put the Gorloks up nine midway through the half. The Panthers would once again cut the lead to single digits, but a 17-7 run from the Gorloks to end the half would put them up 53-38 at the break.

Webster would carry over their momentum into the second half and pushed their lead to 18 with just under 17 minutes to play in the game. They continued to play well as the half progressed and extended their lead to as many as 30 midway through the frame. The Panthers would cut the lead to 21 with nine minutes to play, but that was as close as they would get as the Gorloks closed them out down the stretch to solidify their fifth straight win.

Wynne Brown Jr. led the way for Webster as he finished with a game high 28 points. With his 26th point of the night, Brown Jr. became just the 15th player in program history to surpass the 1,000 career point mark. Brown Jr. has appeared in 75 games in a Gorlok uniform and has averaged 13.0 points throughout his career.

Markus Becton also had a great game for the Gorloks as he finished with a career high 20 points to go along with eight rebounds. In addition, Karl Moore Jr. finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, and a game high seven assists in the contest. Lastly, Jason Coleman finished with 12 points and five assists, Jemard Sykes II finished with 10 points and five assists, Alpha Diallo finished with 11 points, and Josh Luster added 10 points to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.

The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, January 14th when they travel to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
