FULTON, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks won their sixth straight game as they defeated the Blue Jays by a final score of 80-74 to improve to 6-8 on the season and 4-0 in conference play. With the loss, Westminster drops to 2-13 on the year and 1-3 in the SLIAC.
Webster went 27-for-74 (36.5%) from the floor and 9-for-32 (28.1%) from behind the arc. They outrebouned the Blue Jays by a final count of 51-40 with 22 rebounds coming on the offensive end. Webster forced Westminster to turn the ball over 16 times and turned those turnovers into 17 points on the other end of the floor. The Gorloks also dished out 11 assists in the game.
In the first half of the game, both sides came out and exchanged baskets early. With the score tied at 21, the Blue Jays went on a 5-0 run to give themselves a 26-21 lead. The Gorloks would cut the lead back down to one, but a late free throw would give Westminster a 33-30 lead at the break.
Westminster came out of the locker room and extended their lead to seven in the first five minutes of the period. The Gorloks would answer with an 8-0 run of their own to give themselves their first lead of the half with just over 11 minutes to play. The game remained close over the next few minutes, but with the score tied at 62 the Gorloks would go on a 15-5 run to take a 77-67 advantage in the final minute. The Blue Jays would cut the lead to four with 16 seconds remaining, but
Stephen Hawkins would convert his free throws in the final seconds to solidify the Gorloks sixth straight win.
Markus Becton led the way for Webster as he finished with a team high 18 points and a game high 13 rebounds for his () double-double of the season.
Wynne Brown Jr. also finished in double figures as he finished with 16 points to go along with a team high three assists. In addition,
Karl Moore Jr. added 12 rebounds and
Josh Luster had nine points while
Jemard Sykes II,
Mark Moore, and
Stephen Hawkins all finished with eight points.
The Gorloks return to the court on Wednesday, January 18
th when they travel to Eureka, Illinois, to take on the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
